Ready to give up.

I just don't understand it.

I thought i had fixed my mounting problem with The Pandora Directive through d-fend. I've ripped and mounted all 6 drives. I've set the Pandora config files cd map to recognize these drives. Just like when i was using the config file of dosbox, the game only recognizes the first 4 discs.

Can anybody suggest anything? I run dosbox full screen and can't switch out to windows to change discs when needed. I should be able to get all 6 discs working as is.

If you can help, please do. I'm at the Roswell complex. I'm too far to stop playing now! ^^
Wrote this for the other board, perhaps it will help. Good Luck

OK-doki
1st. Install DOS-box, then D-fend, afterwards you need to tell D-fend where DOS-box is.
2nd. Name a folder on you hard drive, say, PD. This is where you will place your CDs.
3rd. In that folder “PD” make six folders labeled as “CD1”-“CD6”.
4th. Copy the each CD to its corresponding folder on your HD.
5th. One that is done run D-fend. Under Profile click Add with Editor.
6th. Now to create the profile. Profile Settings should be the first tab visible. Name the profile PANDORA, if you like.
7th. Now on the Setup EXE line click browse and find the CD1 folder and choose the INSTALL.EXE
8th. Go to the Environment tab. This depends on how good is your computer. My settings are. Amount of DOS memory is 63MBs, enable both XMS and EMS. CPU cycles whatever works best for you, mine is the max 20000. Vid card VGA.
9th. Go to the Sound tab and the first one if not already enabled, enable sound with the little box. Sample rate 44100, block size 2048, prebuffer 10. Type sb16, address 220,
irq 7, dma 1, hdma 5, opl auto, opl rate 44100, use mixer check.
10th. Next the GUS tab, enable gus, address 240, irq 5 5, dma 3 3, sample rate 44100.
11th. Next the MIDI tab, enable MPU-401 and behave intelligently, device default.
Yeah now for the mounting
12th. Click the mounting tab, click the Add button below in that tab.
13th. Now you should have the Add Mounting window. Set the Mount Type to CDROM, Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount: Browse to the dir. Where you put the first cd, CD1, select that directory and OK. Drive label: PANDORA1, note that the final number will change with each consecutive mounted CD. Now, Mounted Drive Letter: D, then click ok. Again this must be consecutive to the corresponding CD, D E F G H I
14th. Repeat this process of a adding a new profile for each of the other CDs until all six have been mounted.
15th. You can either select the same directory as where the cds are or make another one for where you want PD to be installed. So if you want to install PD in the same directory as the CDs you need to again Add another mounting profile, this is the seventh one.
Mount Type: Drive, Select Drive/Cdrom: The folder you want to PD to be installed, so say C:\PD, Drive Label: C:/, mount drive letter: C, click OK and done.
16th. Now click the OK at the very bottom and that should create your profile. We are not done yet though.
17th. Now right click on your profile PANDORA and select Run Setup, this should open a window for PDs install. To go to full screen hit ALT+ENTER, then follow installation procedures. Once that is done exit the game and again ALT+ENTER to exit full screen mode.
18th.Oh if the installation has a problem mounting all the drives within its install don’t worry. Ok return to your profile of PANDORA and right click it again and Edit Profile. On the Profile settings tab now select Game EXE and browse in the folder where you installed Pandora itself and click on TEX4.EXE, C:\PD\PANDORA\TEX4.EXE
19th. Now actually go to your PANDORA folder and click on CONFIG.INI, use notepad to edit these settings and make these particular parameters set as so. Then save and close the file.

[DIGI_CONFIG]
BoardNum=4
IoAddr=0x220
DMA=5
Int=7
Volume=100
ReverseStereo=No

[MIDI_CONFIG]
BoardNum=2
IoAddr=0x388
DigiDrums=Yes
Volume=60

[CD_MAP]
Disk1=D
Disk2=E
Disk3=F
Disk4=G
Disk5=H
Disk6=I

20th. You can now play the game! Without disc swapping. Just start up D-fend and simply double click your PANDORA profile and it should start it up. ALT+ENTER to start in full screen mode, please note that you should wait until the opening video has finished and the PD menu has popped up. For me if I switch to full screen mode before the opening video is finished my sound is screwed-up and it runs slow.

I hope that answers your questions and if you have any other problems just ask

To fix the CD issue, it should be resolved by opening in the PD installation folder the CONFIG.INI and simply edit [CD MAP] to the proper drive locations and save.
Also if you plan to 'hack' a sound card and you have been encountering trouble in getting 16bit stereo, you need to open the SOUND.INF and place a 1 at the end of each line for the [DIGI_BOARD], this tells the program not to verify the sound card and it works, also for UAKM.
Best of luck, hope that solves the CD mapping issue.
PS edit that stuff in notepad.

Thanks for the extensive help file there.

I think i might try copying the CDs to directories and try mounting as CD-roms.. At the moment, i have them all ripped as isos and mounted as images.

The thing is i'm skeptical whether this will help. The fact that i've been playing the game fine with the game recognising 4 of the images but not the other two, makes me wonder if trying this will be a waste of time.

When i say it recognizes 4 of them, it's whichever 4 are mounted first. It doesn't seem to like any virtual drive after G. Even when i've changed the CD map in the config to further letters of the alphabet.

Maybe i got a screwy version of dosbox. Back when i didn't use d-fend, i got a message telling me i could mount 5 drives maximum (that was C drive and 4 of the cds). It seems while i don't get such messages using d-fend, the maximum is still in effect. I dunno :/
Woot! That did it!

The game recognizes all the CDs after i copied them in whole to the hard drive.

I dunno why it wouldn't recognize all the images but now that i got it running, i no longer care. Off to Roswell!
