I'm trying to set up UAKM on XP with DFEND/DOSBOX. I've read the help files but am stuck. I created a profile in dfend for the game(default parameters) but when I try to install the "run setup" option in defend UAKM wants to install to drive F: and wont let me install it to drive C:. In DOSbox it wants me to 'mount' C: drive. I have a Z: drive letter in the command line in Dfend and Ive typed in every possible combination of 'mount c c:\dosprog' possible. HELP!! Please TY jerry

The easiest way to setup and run UAKM is to edit the dosbox conf file, as follows:

Wherever you installed DOSBox, go there and open it. Use Notepad to edit the dosbox.conf, replacing the section under the [autoexec], at the very bottom of the page, with the following:

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount F F:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
mount G G:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioct2
mount C C:\
C:

(Note: if your CD-ROM drives letters are 'D' and 'E' then replace the 'F' and 'G' above with 'D and 'E')

Close the file being sure to save the changes.

Now you can setup UAKM by doing the following: Open DOSBox and after command prompt, enter f: (or d: if that is your CD-ROM drive letter) and type INSTALL.

Once the game is installed, open DOSBox and at the prompt type, cd moon ENTER then type, tex197 ENTER.

If you let me know what your CD-ROM letters are, and what drive you are using to install the moon directory, I can send you a complete profile to setup UAKM using D-Fend.

I did as you said. I installed the game under cdrom drive F:\ prompt then reopened DOSBOX and it had a C:\ prompt. I typed in 'cd moon' and then it gave me a C:\moon> prompt. I then typed in 'TEX197' and it gave me the old 'illegal command' deal. So I cant run the game.

My cd rom drives are F and G and my hard drive is drive C. Any help would be most appreciated Thanks again. jerry

ps. I played Overseer first when it first came out which was the worst mistake of my life. I've been hunting games that are worth a flip ever since with little luck lol(Gabrial Knight). I then played Pandora and attempted for a million hours to run UAKM. So here I am years later bent on playing that game if it kills me. My kids are old enough now to play these games and we just finished Overseer on XP which was cool(man that Micheal York can act).

OK, that's not a problem - There is a patch you can download at this site: http://www.users.bigpond.com/dsebire/co ... wnload.htm
Copy the tex197 file to the moon directory. Now you should be able to run the game from DOSBox by typing, cd moon ENTER then tex197.
You'll most likely be asked to set up your sound device - just use the "Auto Detect", unless you know what it is.

You may want to configure your CD-Rom drives before you begin. There is a config file in the moon directory (where you just placed the tex197 file).Open the config file and scroll down to [CD_MAP] line and make DISK1=F and DISK2=G. You can make DISK3 and DISK4 either F or G - whatever you desire.

I'll send you the D-FEND profile tomorrow.

The game installed per your instructions and came up like it should have. The game plays amazingly slow but audio is perfect although I have no midi music playing(I rushed through the midi setup screen though without looking at it). I guess the D-fend profile settings will solve much of this I hope. Also the game plays within the Dosbox screen which is half the size of my computer desktop. Is there a way to increase the viewing screen? Thank you. Jerry.

If you press Alt+Enter, the dosbox screen should change to full screen.

Setting up a moon profile in D-FEND


Open D-fend and Under Profile click Add with Editor.
Click on the Profile Settings tab.
Name the profile, moon.
Game EXE: C:\MOON\TEX197.EXE
Setup EXE: F:\INSTALL.EXE

Click on the Environment tab and use the following settings:
Amount of dos memory (MB) = use 63
Enable XMS - put a check in the box
Enable EMS - put a check in the box

CPU Settings:
Cycles - 20000 UP - 500 Down - 20
CPU Core - Normal
Frame Skip - 0 (ZERO)

Display:
Video Card - VGA

Click on the Sound tab and use the following settings:

Enable Sound - put a check in the box
Sample Rate - 44100
Block Size - 4096
Prebuffer - 10

Under the Sound Blaster tab:
Type - sb16
Address - 220
IRQ - 7
DMA - 1
HDMA - 5
Opl Mode - auto
Opl rate - 44100
Use Mixer - put a check in the box

Open the GUS tab
Enable GUS - put a check in the box
Address - 240
IRQ - 5 and 5
DMA - 3 and 3
Sample Rate - 44100

Open MIDI tab
Enable MPU-401 - put a check in the box
Behave intelligently - put a check in the box
Device - default

Next step is to mount F drive.
Click on the Mounting tab and do the following:
Click the Add button below
Set the Mount Type to CDROM
Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount:
Click on Browse and find your CD Drive (F) and do a single left click on it.
Click on OK - you should now have your F:/ drive in the Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount: box.
Disk label - disk1
Mounted drive letter - F
Click OK.

Now you need to mount your G drive:
Click on the Mounting tab and do the following:
Click the Add button below
Set the Mount Type to CDROM
Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount:
Click on Browse and find your CD Drive (G) and do a single left click on it.
Click on OK - you should now have your G:/ drive in the Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount: box.
Disk label - disk2
Mounted drive letter - G
Click OK.

Now to mount your hard drive, which is C: drive.
Click on the Mounting tab and do the following:
Click the Add button below
Set the Mount Type to Drive
Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount:
Click on Browse and find your drive (C) and do a double left click on it. Scroll down to the moon directory and do a single left click on it.
Click on OK - you should now see the C:\moon in the Select Drive/CDROM/Image or floppy to mount: box.
Disk label - c:/
Mounted drive letter - C
Click OK.

Make sure that DISK1 is in your F: drive and click OK again to complete the profile.

You shouldn't have to install the game again because you've already installed it from DOSBox.
To run the game, open D-Fend and do a right click on moon then a left click on RUN GAME. Once the game starts to load press the Alt and Enter keys simultaneously - this will put the game into full screen mode. To go back to DOSBox screen use the same two keys. That's it

I'm sorry , but I just tried using the D-FEND setup for moon, and realized you can't swap DISK3 and DISK4 using the Mounting setup the way it is, because you only have two CD-ROM drives. Swapping isn't a problem using DOSBox without D-FEND. The only way you can use D-FEND and not have a problem, is to make clone CD-ROM drives, or use VCD drives with a program such as, VirtualDrive by FarStone, which is what I use. With VirtualDrive you can make up to (22) CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives.

You could also copy each CD to your hard drive and try it that way - personally, I couldn't get it to work for me.


If you're interested in using VCD's, let me know.

As far as getting UAKM to run faster under DOSBox you can edit the dosbox conf file. To do so, open dosbox conf and scroll down to the [cpu] section and change the cycles to 20000 like so, cycles=20000..... You can also have DOSBox open in full screen by changing the fullscreen=false to fullscreen=true, which is also located in the
conf file.

Thanks evryone for your help,
I setup UAKM in dfend per your instructions and have difficulty with the game. The video clips and the VR room run very slow and choppy. The audio is slow and choppy and the midi music still doesnt play. Also, when it ask that I place disc 2 into drive F: it doesnt recognize me clicking on the 'okay" button after Ive swapped the disc. I can start a new game and it will then recognize disc 2 in drive F:!

Sorry for the trouble. Question, once setup correctly will UAKM run a smooth as the original?

I think it would help if we new the specs of your system. If your system doesn't have the power the game will run slow, you also have to confige the CPU cycles, in d-fend, to what is approriate for your system. Also do you have the latest versions of Dos-Box and D-fend?

My specs are Athlon 1.67Mgh,768Ram with a 128meg video card. I think that the cycles are set at 20,000.

I think that is the issue, your CPU isn't powerful enough to handel running the games in D-Fend. This is because D-fend is running ontop of Windows, which is a resource hog within itself, and as well running the game. Once you upgrade you CPU, D-fend will run well, ~3Gighz cpu seems to be the minimal best in my experience. There is another way of running at the very least PD in XP with a program called VDMsound, or whatever it is called. With that program you will just run PD, but you'll have to disc swap. I haven't used this method in a couple of years, I do believe some rememebers much better. Cubase is a source to ask.

How ironic that a 1.6 GHZ with 768 ram isnt good enough to run a Dos game lol. Oh well. I'll try the other method that you suggested. I WILL PLAY UAKM IF ITS THE LAST THING IN DO!!!!
