Boxed versions
So with Tex having always been pretty cutting edge, and with CDs and DVDs slowly becoming extinct, should the boxed versions of the games still come on cd/DVD or should there be some new modern format for 'physical' copies, such as a Tex memory stick containing the game(s)?

Considering nostalgia and being a Tex collector are the main reasons behind getting that boxed copy, I imagine they will include the game on DVD. It would be more pricey to go with some sort of solid state medium, anyway. I definitely want a nice, picture-filled instruction manual in there. And a full colour BFG catalogue!

Bluray HD disc I reckon. Quite a few games released on that format now. Still haven't played it yet but due to the HD cutscenes apparently Final Fantasy 13 for PS3 pushed the Bluray file capacity limits at 40 GB. 32.6 GB of which was video. That's based on an article from early 2010 though, new Bluray discs may be out now with bigger capacity for all I know.
They did say afterall:

Chris & Aaron: The video will be as high quality as possible, with no regard for how many days it may take to download our game.

You got a point there. My PS3 plays Blurays but my PC still only has DVD drive... Seems they don't come cheap yet either
Though if you forego getting a burner drive and just get one that plays Blurays and not writes new ones maybe that is cheaper.
Judging by this thread (linked below) most don't seem to see a point in stepping up to a higher quality disc format with downloadable distribution services available. I guess that is part of the reason why the PC section of brick and mortar stores is smaller and gets pushed to the back over the console stuff:
http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/w ... 35439>=1
Though they did release both a DVD and CD disc version of Overseer back when not many had DVD drives either (I didn't). It may of been as costly back then to get a DVD drive as it is now for Bluray. Sadly in UK they only released the CD version. Then again based on feedback, by the time people got a DVD drive, PC hardware had accelerated past Overseer making it buggy/hard to run anyway... Plus judging by the above thread maybe Bluray drives will never come cheap based on the PC gaming climate.... so I hope they can make the DVD release Bluray quality by using some disc packing tricks since Bluray for PC may remain a 'misnomer'.
I can play downloadable episodes of stuff on BBC iPlayer etc. in full HD since my PC monitor and dual monitor (which is actually a HD TV) are capable of it. So I wouldn't mind if they release two download versions, one that is compressed and one that is the highest quality ever that really does take ages to download. But my broadband speed is decent enough so assuming their server speed is good I should have it by the end of the day even if its 40gb+
It'll be dissapointing though if the boxed version becomes ultimately more compressed than the downloadable version. Unless they send out like 10 DVD discs
Though in that thread on GameTrailers someone said LA Noire required 3 DVD discs for XBox but that if on PC might need less discs due to an ability to compress it onto fewer DVDs and then decompress when installing to PC (dunno how it works but I guess then Project Fedora may fit on fewer DVDs and still come out highest quality).
But of course the initial installation should include taking everything important from all discs and putting it on the HDD or packed with a no-disc swap file like what people have made for the older games. No disc swapping is definitely a must.

I think it will be great having them on DVD because it fits in with the theme too - always finding things on discs to watch or decode, but you're ight about the fact it might mean more discs.
Discs are much cheaper these days but it made me think that you could have one memory stick with every game on for possibly less than having to burn a gazillion discs.

I just purchased another pc to replace my laptop, a all in one unit & I am lucky enough to have a blu-ray burner but I did not purchase it to play games on however the specs of this machine are on par with my desktop.
I think a lot of new machines coming out now have the blu-ray burner as standard, but we are not talking about budget machines.
I cannot seem to turn this one off & go back to my desktop as I am loving this one.

I bought my current PC a couple years ago or something from a small company where you select the parts you want and they put it together. But don't remember Bluray drives being an option back then. I'm unlikely to upgrade for a long time now, since it runs everything I need so far (4gb RAM, Quad CPU etc.).
I tried looking on Amazon and Bluray burners are something like £70, ouch. Did see some Bluray player drives for £40, still kinda pricy though compared to DVD drives. And since I have a PS3 to play Bluray movies and Bluray console games, I guess I would be hesitant to buy a Bluray drive just for 1 game right now, even though Tex is awesome... So hopefully they can max out the quality on the DVD release to be on par with Bluray quality by packing it in tight and then letting the PC uncompress.
I wish my PC was less noisy though, makes watching stuff on a separate player with my PC turned off more enjoyable without that hum, I really should of went the extra length for the more pricy "silent" equipment when I could afford it.

The CD/DVD version in the box should be pretty cool, as well as the "Collector's Edition" boxed set of the old games. I wonder if they will make the box the same size as the old games, or go for a smaller version? It would be a nice touch if they throw some other scrap pieces of paper in the new game box that the old games had such as maybe a "mock" registration card, etc.
I don't have Bluray, and have no plans to get it. Unfortunately, my laptop is getting old, and has a really loud CD/DVD drive, so I am hoping to get a nice fast desktop and have it hooked up to the big TV to play the new Tex game!

It'll probably come out on a bunch of DVDs. Max Payne 3 came out recently and is ~35gb - it came on 4 DVDs. Felt like a blast from the past doing the installation disk swap! It was the first time I've used my DVD drive in months, actually. I'm not sure Bluray will catch on now digital distribution is getting as good as it is - I know I'm certainly not going to shell out for a drive as long as I can keep getting my movies on Netflix and games from Steam.
I think I might put my headphones on and crank it up a bit to drown out the hum sound from my PC. They're just some cheap Sennheiser HD 201 model but they're far better for overall sound than my past cheapos that were falling apartredcat72 wrote:Unfortunately, my laptop is getting old, and has a really loud CD/DVD drive, so I am hoping to get a nice fast desktop and have it hooked up to the big TV to play the new Tex game!
