Unofficial Tex Murphy

Hey, guys!

I'm Stephanie, the community manager for game studio Downward Viral! I wanted to let you know that Tex Murphy will appear as a special guest card in our Kickstarter "Z." -- a digital zombies-versus-survivors trading card game. (Super big thanks to Chris Jones for giving us the okay!)

Tex is one of my guest cards available free for all our backers. Joining the cast is Tim Schafer, Ron Gilbert, Jessica Nigri, and Mr. Destructoid, among others. We're using live photography and gruesome horror effects for all the cards.

What do you guys think? We'd LOVE to hear your feedback. Let me know if you have any questions about the game, too. You can also email me directly.

Hi Stephanie. I think it's cool that you want to include Tex in your game. Sadly, I have to admit that I'm not a zombie game fan myself, but I'm sure those that are will love it.

Awesome and welcome... Please share the Normal and Zombie pics of Tex when you guys have them... Your project certainly sounds interesting, I will be following it to see how it develops... Hope your Kickstarter is a success...

If you are a game player, be sure to try out the Tex games and if you like become a regular here with us, you'd certainly be welcome...

I'm not a zombies person but I had looked up your project on the back of seeing it on the Kickstarter page - I hope you reach your funding target!

I reccomend starting with Under A Killing Moon personally which is when the series saw an overall reboot in terms of style and character. It was also the start of Chris Jones acting the role of the Tex Murphy character in person.

However each game is sort of self-contained. So some here started with Pandora Directive (my favourite). I reccomend checking the synopsis of either and seeing which takes your fancy.

Also there is Overseer after Pandora Directive which retells the story of Mean Streets. Though it does have shorter gameplay due to the reduced production schedule it is still a great game and a fantastic story.

As Sai stated start with UAKM, Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum are really old school video gaming... Once you've enjoyed UAKM, Pandora and Overseer, you can go give those a try, but those aren't what made the series what it is today...

Again as Sai stated each game is a game in itself, you don't really need to have played the game before it to enjoy the next in the series, which is another thing that has made Tex Murphy stand apart from most...


Are you interested in games for the PS 2 or PS3 as well??? Those are my only 2 platforms, I don't have an Xbox to recommend games made solely for that... I do have a Wii, but the Wii is of different nature in my opinion... I haven't expanded my game library for that all that much...

I could also recommend going back to the old Sierra collections, Space Quest, King's Quest, Police Quest, and the lovable Leisure Suit Larry... These are all Computer based and available on GOG... Some of these are point and click whereas a few are really old school and you have to type in the actions you want to the character to preform... But it gives you hours of fun and takes you back to where Adventure Games were born...

There are a lot of Adventure Games that haven't made it to the Modern Computers yet, but I'm sure somebody is working on getting them to run... Ripper for example is a great FMV Adventure Game, but it's not out for the newer systems yet... Keeping my fingers crossed on this one...

Some people here have a broader experience in games than I do, but that comes with their being younger in most cases... As some of these Adventure Games were coming out I was entering higher education and didn't have as much time for games, because they were still Teenagers game play time was still more available to them...

If we're talking Adventure games in general then ones I enjoyed that are easily available on GOG:
Beneath A Steel Sky (it's also free!)
Gabriel Knight 2 (FMV)
Simon the Sorceror 1 & 2
Space Quest series
Normality (the puzzles are obscure, but I liked the characters/story)
7th Guest (if you don't mind tough puzzles, which I suck at, has FMV too)

Adventure games I only played some of but seem good or are often reccomended that are on GOG:
Gabriel Knight 1
Broken Sword series

Ones available for newer computers available elsewhere:
Monkey Island series

For adventure games not on GOG or newer systems (here's hoping they will be someday):
Freddy Pharkas Frontier Phamracist, Black Dahlia (FMV), Toonstruck (FMV & Animation)

GOG also has Little Big Adventure 1 & 2 which is more Action Adventure but alongside Tex Murphy they were a memorable part of my childhood. I'd still love a Little Big Adventure 3 but sadly plans for it fell through. There is still the Magicball Network site who reports on any developments though and circulating hope (similar to Tex scene, it has been 15 years there). I am glad that the Tex Murphy team have revived things so at least one of my favourite game series can see the light of day again

I personally enjoyed still life 1 & 2. Based on a female FBI who is tracking down a serial killer, both are now available on gog

In case you didn't know, Post Mortem.
It's about the father of the female fbi agent in Still Life.

Don't know if this title is on GoG, I have all of them on Steam.

Syberia 1+2 and Longest Journey 1+2 are also must have adventures.

yes actually I purchased them all from steam but most people would prefer to buy from if gog if available.

I have been meaning to check out some of the other classics you've all mentioned, especially now that they've gotten so much fresh attention on Kickstarter. We at Z. can't claim the same call to fame, but we're hoping everyone will give it a try, anyway. I'll keep everyone updated with news and such. We should have an announcement pretty soon about how we plan to balance out the game, if that interests you. And below is a sneak peek of cosplayer Linda Le's card:

Yeah it actually came out around the time of X-Files popularity height during the 1990s and I was a big X-Files fan so Pandora Directive became my favourite for the atmosphere.
