Windows 7... finally, the windows you've been waiting for...

The final release date of windows 7 is quickly approaching and I have been following its progress very closely over the past couple of years and thought I would give you all a quick update, as well as details of a recent bombshell announcement that has the tech world in a buzz.

As some of you may be aware, the general consensus of Vista was that it was a flop. While I don't completely agree, it was definitely not for everybody. Especially XP veterans.

However (and hard as it is to believe), it looks like Microsoft has finally listened to the users when developing Windows 7. Cutting to the chase; Windows 7 is what Vista should've been. I, along with many others in the tech savvy community have had the opportunity to test run the new platform, and can honestly say it was very difficult to fault the new operating system. Literally all of the annoyances in Vista have been removed, and many useful features have been added. Including (and wait for it): XP Mode!

XP mode is for the users who are still a bit weary of moving away from XP and into Windows 7. Unlike your standard compatibility mode (much like the "Run for windows 98... etc. mode you have in XP, and Vista), Windows 7's new "XP Mode" is built on virtual PC technology and literally enables you to run your XP compatible programs flawlessly as if you were still using Windows XP. So after listening to users, MS has finally eliminated the last wall preventing users from upgrading, and allaying most (if not all) negative apprehensions.

But, if your next question is: "But will it run Tex!!??"... then the answer is no. BUT... becuase of the native XP Mode, all your Tex games you managed to get running in XP will run fine in Windows 7, without the need to change your approach at all. So the Docs flash drives will work!

Feel free to discuss and ask any questions.

Windows Blows would have been more poetic...

Dude... Mac? That's like... Fisher-Price My First Computer(tm)...

On a more serious note, Windows 7 sounds like it'll be good once they work the bugs out.

...You know the ones I mean :P

Like they were suppose to work the bugs out of Vista and Millennium???

I here people praise Mac all the time... The only time I ever used Apple was in School, that's all school ever had for some reason...

I guess I'll just stick with XP for a good while longer...

Is "Windows 7" its final name or is that just its project name? May be a silly question, but I haven't been keeping up to date with the new windows etc etc.

And whatever happened to Windows Longhorn?

This thread was created to keep people informed who are interested in the progress of Windows 7. Not an excuse to start bagging out Microsoft.

Most of the Vista "bugs" have been eliminated since SP1. As for Millennium, they made the best decision they could: forgot about it and moved on!

What people need to realise is Windows is far more robust than people give it credit for. There is a reason why OSX for the Mac gives the illusion of being more stable all round. It's because Mac hardware configurations are all the same, and there is only a small handful of approved internal configurations which can make up a Mac hardware platform. Mac builds the machines with very little variation, so OSX only has been programmed to only cater for this small handful of configurations in Mac systems.

Now in comparing Windows to OSX; Windows has to work in MILLIONS of hardware configurations, most of which are custom built. So in essence Windows needs to be far more robust and scalable to cater for the millions of different possible combinations of hardware out there from multiple manufacturers, not to mention custom built machines.... and not just one.

Think about it this way: Notice how Windows was recently made available to run on Mac systems? And for the most part is runs very well. Also notice how Apple is very much against allowing OSX to be run on a PC. Now a lot of people think this is becuase they are greedy and want people to buy a Mac if they want OSX... which is half true. I personally believe it is becuase they know that OSX would be no where near as robust enough to handle so many variables in the hardware configurations present on most PCs... at least not as many as Windows is able to handle.

Interesting don't you think?

So before we turn this thread into another Mac vs. PC debate, perhaps you should realise that Windows is designed to run on 95% of the worlds personal computers, no matter what components they use... that's 950 Million computers with an estimated 600 Million different configurations! Mac OSX so far runs on about 30 configurations... and it's still not free of crashes.

Edit>

As for Windows longhorn, that was the original codename for Vista, then it became the codename for Windows Server 2008.

As far as I know Windows 7 is the final release name. Oh btw Baf, if Windows 7 is a crappy name, I suppose OS7, OS8, OS9 and OSX are all shining examples of creativity?
Very Well, My Apologies... Certainly wasn't try to rustle any feathers, I'll leave your thread be...

It's not too better than Vista. Wasn't that the name of a soft drink? New operating systems mean new exploits. They need to just give it up already.

Edit: Doh I just read Cubase's reply. I guess it's good idea to read everything before replying. I'm not advocating Mac either btw.
LINUX WOO!

Well said Cub, however we use both Mac OS and Windows on our PC's natively. As much as Apple doesn't want us running it on a PC we do anyway. I am personally a Windows guy, (and stoked for W7) mainly because I stuck with it through all the crappy years and now it has actually become really good. I find it better to just use both OS's as I have to go back and forth for various video related applications and operations. The only issue between Mac and Windows comes down to how you use a computer.

If you don't really do anything other than surf the web and type out documents and maybe tinker with some video and music then Mac might be the way to go. Mac has always catered to the everyday Joe and made their products "look cooler" where as Windows and PC's have always been about business and really in depth computing, catering more to the independent programmer and anyone else wanting to do more with their computer. Mac has always fallen short in that department (it's still UNIX based, just try to copy/move a file larger than 8 gig anywhere.)

Neither of them is "better" it all comes down to what computer will suit your needs. I require more from a computer so I can only go Windows, but I can also get it to run Mac when I need it. So I get the best of both worlds. Mac can also run Windows under emulation but it's just not the same as running natively. I'm personally sick of fixing people's computers who don't know what they are doing when they allow viruses/spyware etc. into their system, so I try to send them to Mac where they won't have those problems. However the more successful Mac is the more likely people start to make viruses and whatnot for it.

Long story short, there's no point in bashing either OS as it just comes down to a matter of opinion and when it comes to that there is no right answer so why debate it? It's a personal choice. I can't wait for Windows 7 as I have been hearing nothing but good things about it (abnormal for a Windows product) so I may just have to take it for a test drive when it is released. Hey when is it released anyway? I heard the fall/winter is that correct?
I haven't really seen anything from Windows 7 worth upgrading from Vista for yet. The XP VM would be nice, I guess, but I paid a buttload for Vista Ultimate and I dont think I've gotten my money out of it yet.

That is correct, we should still definitely see a release before the end of the year at worst.
