They're gonna fire the World Cannon

Down in Switzerland, they're getting ready to fire the Large Hadron Collider tomorrow. It's the world's largest particle accelerator (a perfect circle, 27 kilometers around)
They're gonna fire a single proton-beam through it first, which, admittedly, won't really do much. Oh sure, it'll teach us all about new things in the world of the micro, but, compared to the next stage, it's harmless. The next stage, is about firing two proton-beams - one in each direction, to collide. Now, the fallout from this is, among other things, minute black holes. One of those grow powerful, and it's, in the words of Carter Burke,
adios, muchachos!.
However, the top leading scientists are claiming that's very unlikely to happen, so we should be safe.
I dunno which is more exciting - that we might learn more about the origin of our universe, or that we might be witnesses to the end of the world.
Oh, and yes. Official page clicky-link:

Considering everything we know about black holes is theory and not proven fact . . . I think I will go and get terrified now. Happy destruction of earth, see "y'all" when the earth collapses in on itself!

I'm betting nothing of significance will occur, but still rooting for the black hole.
Go baby go!

I'm with Frank; nothing serious will happen but I hope we learn something significant. You can be sure of one thing, though. If the governments can figure a way to turn this into the greatest destructive weapon of all time, they'll do it. Sad.
BTW, they (scientists, politicians, etc.) thought that something terrible might happen when they tested the first atom bomb, namely, it could start a chain reaction that couldn't be stopped. They went and tested it anyway. Guess they don't care much for life on earth. Figures.

Makes you wonder, even if they don't think the worse could happen, they still Know that it could... Why would you even attempt something like that knowing what it "Could" do??? As much as I love science and such, the paths some scientist take to reach their goals puzzle me...

Who dares, just might Doom us all... lol
So if you feel an uncontrollable urge to start moving in a direction towards Switz, you'll know something went wrong...

Sigh. If you're a scientist. Why would you do this?

À vaincre sans péril on triomphe sans gloire.
Truth be told this is all speculation and no one really knows what to expect from it. Restraining themselves from firing it up based on assumptions and collective imagination would be a bit silly. Besides, fast food science has a tendency to exaggerate everything and blow discoveries/correlation effects out of proportions.
If we happen to open a portal to hell then so be it, I'll grab my crowbar and hazard suit and start kicking some alien butts.

That's portal to another dimension. A portal to Hell requires nothing more than a shotgun and a chainsaw.
And perhaps a BFG 9000.

True enough. Although we still really know nothing about what's going on. G-man very well might be the devil himself.
Hell could require nothing but a phone call if Ghostbusters 3 ever gets made. Granted it might take an extra bit longer to get into their jumpsuits this time around.

Its events like this that set us up for history's greatest "I told you so"'s...
I must say though, out of all the ways to die, getting sucked into a black hole is by far the coolest! But then it will kind of lose its edge if everyone end up doing it too! Damn conformists!
Oh, and Jim... you're not going to tell me you were around when they were tinkering with the first atomic bombs were you? Sounds kind of like the chain reaction you get when the whole family polished off a pot of chille con carne.
If this is the end of the world soon may I wake up on Chandler Avenue, and only then will I truly be in heaven! In the meantime, let me get back to wasting my life as if nothing bad is ever goign to happen!

Exactly my question, but they claim to be 99% sure the Black Hole theory won't happen, so that is why they are doing it...
Cubase wrote:Its events like this that set us up for history's greatest "I told you so"'s...
Only problem with this "I Told You So" Theory is, there will be No One Left to say "I Told You So"... lol
What really made me laugh was when the one Scientist got on the News and they said they will be unable to predict how long it will take for the Earth to be consumed if the Black Hole thing does happen...
IF it happens, does it really matter how long it will take??? lol

If science kills us before the next Tex game I will be thoroughly displeased.

Well they tested it one way and they are pleased with the outcome... Next they will test it in the other direction and then we will be on course for the Black Hole Experiment...

Yes I have to agree...
