The last film you´ve seen and your thoughts about it

Kick Ass.

I went in with a few friends, not expecting anything for the sole reason that I hadn't seen anything at all about it. Not one preview, not one critic. I was told the press here gave it four stars, something so damn rare for an american movie with a seemingly largebudget that the oddity alone justified the choice. Still, I didn't know what it was about.

It turned out to be both strange and refreshing, and yet left us clueless as to what it was about, and speachless on the topic of whether or not we actually liked it. It was filled with what I'm used to see in Japanese and Korean movies during the summer film festival, with an all-american cast, something that still doesn't quite register in my mind.

Nicholas Cage, by the way, gives us one of his best roles ever in there. The guy is psychotic, in an entirely not serious way (for a change), and doesn't take the whole ordeal seriously. He's just nuts, in a wonderfuly silly violent way.

We all collectively laughed and cheered, something I haven't seen in a conventional cinema for years, but I think the ending was so out there (on purpose), that we weren't the only one speechless when the credits rolled in.

Still, I'd watch it over Watchmen, and I'm happily surprised to see a non-indie film embracing a non-conventional format, very close to the Japanese spirit of sillyness, and yet a profoundly american identity.

Speaking of action flicks, the first trailer we saw before Kickass was a film with Jet Li, Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold, Bruce Willis, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke and a bunch of others. The movie looks bad, but damnit all if it's not the coolest cast I've seen since the 80s for an action movie. My childhood in a nutshell, crammed into a single preview! All it needed was Van Damme and Segal, and the circle would be complete!

Watched The Box recently... I must say that is one Weird movie... A guy gets struck by lightning, then his mutilated body is taken over by an alien entity and goes around promising people a million dollars and someone they don't know will die if they push a button... Very strange movie...

I heard it's not as good as his first flick Donny Darko

Based on the short story Button, Button, I should think. The same one they used for that one episode of The Twilight Zone with the same name.

One of my favorite episodes, actually. I saw it when I was a kid, and it was one of those things that got me hooked on weird stories.

Last film I saw was Law Abiding Citizen. I admit I'm an admirer of F. Gary Gray after seeing his film The Negotiator.

Baf - are you recommending The Box or warning us against it?

Just got The Forbidden Planet today from Netflix. We will watch it soon. Great old sci-fi movie. I wonder why they have never made a remake of this one?

I love the Forbidden Planet... Did you get the one in Color or the original Black and White???

As for the Box, I guess it depends on the type of mood you are in... I probably wouldn't recommend it... It was very weird and drawn out... An hour and 56 minutes that you won't be able to get back...

Recently saw Equilibrium again.

Saw How To Train Your Dragon and Bounty Hunter tonight, along with Hot Tub Time Machine again... I love the Drive-In...

How To Train Your Dragon was pretty good... A definite for the kiddies...

Bounty Hunter was pretty funny, actually had a bit more to the story than I expected... I'm becoming a pretty big fan of this Gerard Butler... So far everything I've seen him in I've liked... I haven't seen anything that he did before Tomb Raider, or at least I can't remember him from anything before then, even though his career started back in the mid 90s...

And I've already talked about Hot Tub Time Machine...


Also watched Killing Me Softly recently... If you're a Heather Graham fan {you know what I mean}, then you'll want to see this, otherwise take that stuff out and it's your basic Lifetime Channel style movie...

Hey just saw Iron Man 2. It's was pretty good for a sequel. It had a little too much action and violence for me but it had a lot of funny parts.

Best line ever was Nick Fury saying "I'll be keeping my eye on you". haha.

Saw Legion.
Was an okay movie.
Entertaining but not spectacular.

The action was cool, but I wasn't a fan of the ending. It would have been nice if they showed the aftermath of Armageddon instead of just focusing on a few people stuck in a remote gas station/diner.

Took my son to see How To Drain Your Dragon and Iron Man 2...

IM2 was pretty good, possibly even better than the first one with the exception of his cave prison in the first one, I really enjoyed that seen where he created the heart reactor thingy and busted out of jail...

The Dragon movie was pretty good, a well rounded family flick...



Watched After The Sunset recently too... I really like this money, it's one of those Cheer for the Bad Guys kind of movie... lol

After the Sunset was alright, but you ought to watch The Matador. Came out not too long after Sunset, also featuring Brosnan as a bad guy, but in this one he is ridiculously decadent. Apart from the cheesy ending it was deliciously funny. Might not want to watch with your son though!

In the same style, but much more serious, Tailor of Panama featured the best of Brosnan's performance in a very cynical and interesting political thriller. The movie's aged a bit though, but it's still just as good.

I've seen them, just not recently... After The Sunset I caught on TV just a couple of days ago, so just thought I'd mention it while submitting my reviews...

This is a spaghetti western type movie made in Korea about three gunslingers searching for vengeance/treasure across Manchuria. Very fast paced, cool action scenes and minimal CGI make for a fun experience! As long as you don't mind subtitles. Also, Koreans must think all cowboys have pencil thin mustaches.

This was called Richard Kelly's mainstream film, and I suppose after Donnie Darko and Southland Tales a story about a box with a button that kills someone you don't know and then you get a million dollars sounds more traditional. In comparison. It's still crazy up the ass. It kind of reminds me of the glory days of the X-Files, when Mulder and Scully find themselves always on the outskirts of a grand conspiracy so big it seems almost impossible to fight against.
