The last film you´ve seen and your thoughts about it
I watched G.I.JOE: Rise Of Cobra yesterday... Pretty good action flick... The only thing that made me think of the cartoons were the names, otherwise it was just an action film... But it was still a good movie even if it didn't run along the lines of the cartoon...
Spoiler Alert, if you haven't seen it...
The biggest thing that takes it away from the cartoon is the origin of the JOEs... G.I. JOE was always "American Heroes", in the movie they are an International Force and they are based in the middle of the Desert in Egypt... They made the Cobra Commander and Duke Best Friends...
Like I said though, it's still a good Action Movie, plenty of good actions and special effects... I look forward to a Sequel...

I just finished watching "The Fourth Kind". It's a movie you won't soon forget, or stop thinking about for a while.
The structure of the movie was very intriguing. At the very beginning of the film, Milla Jovovich appears and says something like, "Hi, I'm Milla Jovovich, an actor. In the film you're about to see, I play Dr Abby Tyler. This film is based on true events, and all the action and dialog you see in our reenactments are taken directly from the original taped interview,...etc..."
The film proper begins with an original taped interview featuring, presumably, the real Dr. Abby Tyler. Then it goes split screen, with the original interview continuing on the left and the reenactment on the right. Then Milla's voice replaces the real Abby's and finally goes to single-screen with only the reenactment. Nearly every scene begins this way to emphasize that this is all base on recorded data and not even the dialog has been changed. When things get kind of hairy and you think this must be artistic license, the screen reverts back to the original video tapes to show that it is just like the real thing.
This was a very interesting way to do the 'reality' style of filming without having to annoy the viewer with a jumpy camera, poor acting, etc. Very effective and pretty scary.
Check it out.

I plan on seeing that, but I'm going to take David to see Disney's A Christmas Carol in 3D first... I'll probably go with someone to see The Fourth Kind next weekend while he is at his mother's...

I want to see that too!! hehe.
Ok.... So I have 3 movies to post about. I'll do each individually.
First.
Last weekend I saw The Ninth Configuration aka Twinkle, Twinkle Killer Kane.
It was done by William Peter Blatty of Exorcist fame. Overall it is a decent film,
if you like artsy films.
It has lots of humour and a very strong message, although it was one of those films that I think was better as a book. I never read the book, but i just got that feeling. It is not a bad film by any means though.
The first half of the film was the strongest and the ending was very good too... but I hated the bar scene up to the last part of it.
The film is basically about a group of soldiers that lost it right before being deployed. They end up all being put in a military mental institution that is stationed in an old castle. The military wants to prove that they are faking it to get out of deployment. One man stands out from the rest though, because he is an astronaut, Capt Billy Cutshaw, instead of a soldier, that went crazy before going into space. This astronaut is supposed to be the same one that was at the party in the first exorcist movie; the one Regan tells is going to die up there.
The astronaut loses his faith in God, and drives himself mad with the fear of being in space and dying alone. At the start of the movie, a new psychiatrist, Col. Vincent Kane, comes the asylum to help try some new experimental treatment and the story centers around the astronaut and the psychiatrists interactions. I am not going to say much more, otherwise it will spoil it.
One other character stands out though, and that is Lt. Frankie Reno, played by Jason Miller. That is the same guy that plays Father Karas in the Exorcist. He and Cutshaw are the best actors in the whole movie. Jason Miller plays an excellent crazy person.... In fact, all scenes with both these two are amazing. After watching them long enough, you actually feel yourself starting to go nuts.
Kane on the other hand was a little too wooden.... that is the way the character is supposed to be, but I think it was overdone.
I don't think this film is as good as Blatty's second directorial, Exorcist III, but still a decent film. I am sure though, that the book is by far superior, as was the case in the first Exorcist and the third one. Funny how he wrote the book form of all three of these stories. He is a better writer than film maker, but his films are very unique.
Anyway, I think some people on the site would really like this, especially you Jim. Baf, this may not be your cup of tea, but give it a try.

Next Movie,
Saw VI.
I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. This is by far the best Saw film since the first and third ones. I actually think it is a bit better than the third one.
Deals with an insurance underwriter who fabricated a formula to decide who is deserving of coverage and who is denied. His formula has resulted in the death of a few of the characters. Jigsaw decided before he died, its time for him to factor into his game.
The opening scene is one of the most intense scenes I have ever seen in a horror flick. It left me speechless. The ending is pretty gruesome and intense too.
Many questions are answered from the previous films, such as, what was in the letter given to Amanda in Saw III, and what was in the box given to Jill in Saw V, Although.... I didn't notice the grand scheme revealed as is said in the synopsis.
This film is a must see for any Saw fan as it is a return to form, and a good one at that.
Bring on Saw VII 3D!!!

Last Film
Just saw Lady in the Water.
Was surprised by this film.
I didn't think it was as bad as a lot of people said. I actually enjoyed it.
Much, much better than the piss poor film, The Happening.
You just have to watch it for what it is.... A Bedtime Story/Fairytale.
Some may like it and some may hate it.

I watched both volumes of Kill Bill back to back on Sunday and absolutely loved it. The combination of Samurai and Spaghetti Western worked surprisingly well. While the action was over the top, I wouldn't say it was cruel or sadistic torture in any manner but instead had comical undertones attached to it. It's a shame that there isn't a category for Fight Chroreography at the Academy Awards because these films would have wiped the floor in 2003.
My favourite of the two is definitely the more solemn dialogue driven second installment. David Carradine's performance is impressionable and the Superman speech is just class.
Terrific stuff, absolutely loved it and will do it again some day. They have to be watched back to back though, I can't imagine the films having the same impact with a gap between watching the two.

I watched a movie that is a few years old, but I never heard of it until I found it on Netflix... It's called From Hell... It stars Johnny Deep and Heather Graham... It's a movie about Jack The Ripper... Pretty good view of who the Ripper might have been... Deep's character was a little weird, but if it wasn't they would have found someone else to play it, right... lol
Anyway, if you are a fan of the whole Ripper tale, I recommend giving it a watch...

No offense to my good friend Baf, but if I want to see From Hell, all I have to do is go to work each day. You see, our company does 90% of its work in Detroit. You can't imagine the extent of pervertedness in this city. It's disgusting!
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
Now starring - James The Youth-Challenged Guy in: Tales From Detroit!
Actually, I don't think I really fancy hearing those stories, Jim. A buddy of mine's a cop, I've heard enough horror stories from him, and I live in a smallish tri-town area with 100.000 people in total. So yeah, people can, in reality, be quite sick.
To recap - I saw Be Kind Rewind recently. A fun little flick with Jack Black, Mos Def and Danny Glover. Glover owns a VHS-rental store in New Jersey, and while away on a rememberance trip with old friends, Black and Def manage to erase all the videos in the store. To repair this damage, they decide to re-film the old classics, starring themselves, in the hope no one will notice. They call these films "sweded". Of course these new films are a huge hit, and the money rolls in. But there're dark clouds on the horizon in the form of *gasp* Hollywood.
Fun film.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Went and saw Disney's: A Christmas Carol in 3D... Awesome movie... The special effects are out of this world, the whole movie is one giant special effect... Granted the story has been around for a very long time and done over a dozen times more in one way or another, but Disney did an excellent job... I highly recommend it for anyone... It could be taken as a bit scary for children under 8, but I think with a bit of sweet talk in their ear from the adult they are with they'll be just fine...
