I miss the good ol adventure game days
I especially like the Fallout 3 reference... I remember Fallout 2 from back in the day, your decisions mattered in that game too... If you killed too many innocents, no matter what town you went to people ran from you or tried to kill you because you had made the decision to be a prick, so now you're going to be treated like one...
I never ended up playing Deus Ex, it sounds like a great game... How old is it??? If it's pretty old, is it possible to run on modern PCs???
That is true about Fallout 2 compared to Fallout 3. Don't even get me started on the ending situation. Won't talk about it because of spoilers. The thing about Fallout 2 is that your character motivation to do the things he did.. In Fallout 3, you are mean just for the sake of being mean... no other reason.
Fallout 2, you sell one of the characters into slavery... why? because you just lost all your money and need to eat. You later can run into this character and rescue him, but will have to win his confidence back. Every aspect of the story was thought out so that if the character was mean... it was because you were fighting for survival and you were put in situations that made a person desperate.
BTW Baf. Deus Ex will run on any machine that has xp, as far as i know. It is new enough that you should be okay.
Half-Life is a gem. It was one of those games that truly sucked you in. Me personally, I cannot stand online FPS. To me they are boring. I want a game that sucks me into the story. I view games as an interactive book and the more gaming shies away from this and moves towards interactive movie, it bothers me. Interactive movies of the past, such as pandora, felt like interactive books because of the amazingly fleshed out stories. It is one of those games that I think translates better to a book than to a movie. The only game in the FPS genre that really impressed me was Half Life 2... now THAT was how they should be done. It's almost like a mix between an all out story driven adventure and a strategic shooter, with the every so often all out gunfest.
Half-life was one of the first games that had a real story. Quake 2 tried to do it, but all it was was a go fetch this etc. type game. It was the traditional FPS with a little objective menu that told you where to go instead of letting you figure it out.
I mentioned blizzard games previously... so i won't talk about them again.
Anyway.
I think the period of 1994 to 2001 was the absolute best gaming has ever been and I am starting to see game development move in that direction again since the recession.... lets just hope it continues that way. The adventure genre seems to be where it is starting and maybe rpgs as well... with dragon age coming out. I have high hopes for this one considering it is from the makers of Baldur's Gate.

Damn Vracar, that's tough cookies! Let's hope things look up soon, eh?
Also, I'm ashamed to say, I've never *really* tried Deus Ex. Did I miss out on something? Is it worth going back to look up on it?

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I'm not ashamed of games I didn't try or hear about... There are just so many and so little time... But from Frank's description of the game, I'm regretful that I missed that one along with several others I'm hearing about for the first time since coming here...
Yeah that's something I loved about Fallout 2, provided you didn't make the exact same decisions, it was never the same game...

Deus Ex is a game that every one needs to try.
It is definitely something that is worth looking up.
I know there are some fan projects going on right now to replace the textures with high resolution ones... not sure how they are moving along, but yes, It is worth a try.
Here is an example of a broken game.
Darkseed.
Here is an example from a forum on this game on how the game plays. Good story, but severe design flaws
That is the example of a broken game. Another one was Playboy the Mansion.... believe it or not, my wife was playing it cause it was kind of like sims... anyway. She got to chapter 8 and was screwed.... had to restart.
Deus Ex never had you run into situations like this, which is why it was so great. It was challenging... but not broken.

Vracar, you mentioned that Frank's description is an example of a broken game. I have to disagree on that point. Situations in that game were well thought out. It was one of those games where there was always a solution. If you were ill prepared, you just had to dig more and improvise. The thing is, that these things were built in. They were intentional, and they made you have to think and sometimes get creative. Kinda like McGyver =P (sorry... bad joke)I'd call your example of the confrontation in Dues Ex an example of a broken game, or at least a broken aspect to the game. The developers planned a situation that required the use of specific materials without noting the player that anything would be needed, so the player resorts to carrying what the player thinks might be needed and hopes for the best.

So basically, you only have a limited time to pick up certain items.... then they are gone for good. One item you need to get at the beginning of the game and don't discover you needed needed it til the end of the game. Guess what .... you can't go back and have to restart.Adventure games in this mold were really THE reason why The Divine Forces of the Universe created cheat guides.
"Oh, you mean you didn't pick up the key in the second blue book from the left in your study 20 minutes ago? Sorry, you really needed that to finish this puzzle section up. Oh, no, you can't go back and get it now. Have fun restarting the damned game!"
Most Adventure games wouldn't really punish you for overlooking something or not playing "click the pixels" over every possible surface.
This game, its disdain was palpable.

Broken might have been a bit harsh. I'll take that back.
And Fred, you tell me I'm being negative, I tell you about my school woes and suddenly I get an e-mail telling me I've won a scholarship that'll pay for two thirds of my fall tuition. Now I just need you to call me out on being lonely so I can tell you about not having a girlfriend...

Left 4 Dead. This is another gem in FPS' because it implements team work like no other game.
Its just plain fun.

You're all a bunch of lonely, broke, pessimistic whiners with no life expectancies beyond the priest pronouncing your name right at yer funerals!
There ya go. According to Murphy's Law you'll all be well-to-do within the month, give or take fifty-sixty years.

Except you, Jim! In fifty-sixty years time you and me will celebrate The Good, the Bad and the Ugly's 100th birthday with a fine bottle of sweet, vintage Geritol!

Ouch... You just finally played Pandora only a few years ago, instead of 15... lol Yes that is a long wait, but as you said, the best game ever... At least you got to play it...
