"Tex Murphy - Project Fedora" is now live on Kickstarter.

Oh definitely. I love MST3K and I have watched SpoonyOnes funny critical playthroughs of FMV games more than once for the great entertainment value!LockeCole wrote:I'd argue that there are those of us who love some FMV games because of their terribleness as well. I'm nostalgic for Digital Pictures because those 'games' were some of the few that managed to be so bad they're good, Like a Manos: The Hands of Fate (MST3k).
I liked Toonstruck and GK2 etc. interactively but in the vein of a traditional 3rd person point and click such as I enjoyed with Monkey Island etc. Whereas with Black Dahlia it was more of a 1st person perspective point and click through pre-rendered areas, which was fun too.Tex is one of the few that used FMV and was good, and Tex is THE only game/series that used it well interactively. Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, GK2, Toonstruck and the Wing Commanders after 2 all did a fine job of integrating it, and they were good games, but none made the game feel like it connected to the FMV.
But yeah Tex Murphy did their own thing and they did it really well. It's odd that noone else thought to mimic it in the genre (perhaps it was a budget thing) but then that just means all the more that it is now a unique selling angle that could be added to the Kickstarter page.
Tex Murphy is Immersive!
It suits the investigative feel as you feel like you're actually there hunting for those clues. It adds to the intensity in rumagging through a room you shouldn't be because at any moment someone might return.
This is something that makes it rank top of my list. Both the FMV *and* the gameplay evoked an emotional responce. People remember the gameplay fondly because of moments where you're trying to avoid the GRS security, pursuing the Black Arrow Killer, exploring the Roswell base, hunting through isolated cabins in the woods etc.
Again I can enjoy the 3rd person perspective. But I do notice with GK2 the moment most people say evoked an emotional responce of being more intense was in the final chase section that is done as a first person perspective (won't say more due to spoilers). Tex Murphy captured that feeling quite frequently and they really need to make a big thing of it on the Kickstarter page by having some focus videos on the gameplay.

After yesterday, the average daily requirement to get to $450,000 is now only $9,200 ($249,000 remaining at 12am EDT/27 days). I think this is very achievable. Today is already at about $3,500.
I took that picture a few years ago. I heard a bunch of rustling outside the kitchen window and I look out to see a raccoon standing on the window sill. In broad daylight, no less. It stood there staring at me and didn't even budge much once my dog started barking at it. Eventually it slowly sneaked away.Frank wrote:ding ding ding
2000 backers, 200 000k!
PS: Matthew, that raccoon is positively wonderful.

I heard the rumors about a sequel. Though hopefully nothing "kicks" off for a good while in the future yet if it comes to that.
But at the very least they should release it on GOG.
[EDIT]
By the way the way I remembered an old GOG interview where it was said:
http://www.gog.com/en/news/your_questio ... nners_pt_iI guess it depends on the budget. With a small budget, I might create a “Choose Your Own Adventure” game with audio, FMV, interactive conversations, and a small amount of deductive gameplay. A 3D world is a significant investment and, while it’s a fun part of the old games, I don’t think it’s why most of our fans love the games. With a full budget, I would make a game like the old ones.
I think the statement was fair in the sense that over the years a majority have probably been more vocal either just for more on the characters/story ( so even just another radio theater if need be). Or more of Chris Jones etc. back in FMV (popular judging by the question added to the FAQ after launch "Will the game be FMV?"). The current Kickstarter seems to focus on these 2 aspects as a result.
Of course in the comments of the interview, fans expressed big interest in the 3D environments though and Aaron's more recent Adventure-Treff interview included "3D exploration" as one of the things fans love about the old games.
Plus I think the whole thing comes down to appealing outside of old fans for Kickstarter. They may not be that impressed by FMV or by a 3D roaming adventure game (Normality also had this). But both together and to the extent the Tex Murphy games do it? That's unique. So I wonder if we'll see it incorporated as a feature video for newcomers to the series on the main page sometime

I really disliked Normality, I guess I expected a 'Tex' like experience and felt REALLY let down.
I also didn't enjoy Conspiracies much (which is almost a direct Tex clone with FMV + 3D room exploration) since its writing felt off... I haven't tried the sequel (but unless I get a gust of praise from the members here I think I'll pass).
As technology progressed I really wished someone would take the old Tex formula and do something GOOD with it, but alas, that did not happen...

Oh it was fun for me, I liked the whole concept/story of the game. As criticism I didn't like the illogical puzzles. However I didn't go into it thinking of Tex Murphy at all. I mean theres the roaming around and the dysoptian setting. But from the box it looked totally different, more cartoony and zany. In America they had Corey Feldman for the voice which surprised me but in UK we had different actors. Some dislike the UK version (picked it up on GOG) but its the first I heard so I like it.sbenrap wrote:I really disliked Normality, I guess I expected a 'Tex' like experience and felt REALLY let down.
Never head of or played Conspiracies though.

I played a version which was distributed by Gremlin I believe, I couldn't get into the feel of the game and ended up using a walkthrough up until a point where I was supposed to find something which wasn't where the walkthrough said it was... I gave up and tossed it... maybe I'll give it another go on the next GOG sale...Sai wrote:Oh it was fun for me, I liked the whole concept/story of the game. As for Conspiracies, they are a Greek copy/paste of Tex, future detective and all, seemed promising but ended up being dull. It also ended with a form of cliffhanger, but I really couldn't care less about the characters portrayed there...
Take a look at the video here and tell me it doesn't look familiar

Yeah, love Toonstruck, just replayed it recently as well as Braindead 13.mr_cyberpunk wrote:

Hm Gremlin Interactive sounds familiar so could be. When I first played it back in the mid 90s I had no internet, so me and a friend basically tried to figure it out. Replaying it on GOG I had to use a walkthrough too. As a GOG review puts it - the puzzles try too much to be "not normal"sbenrap wrote:I played a version which was distributed by Gremlin I believe, I couldn't get into the feel of the game and ended up using a walkthrough up until a point where I was supposed to find something which wasn't where the walkthrough said it was... Nah that video didn't really sell me.Both games are on gamersgate if you want some clone till the real deal ships
Anyway, I think the Kickstarter has gone up a good few thousand since I last looked. It's great its getting to the 50% mark in under a week.

Mentioned it someplace else, but I'd rather put this here after all. Chris England, of the Xenonauts project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/693 ... rs?page=52) has endorsed Project Fedora and has pledged to it. Many of our backers are also pledging to Xenonauts, so this seems like an interesting alliance, despite the difference in genres. I noticed that a few of his backers have followed through and pledged to Tex, once he entered his.
If you were ever interested in his X-Com remake, look over for his project, get the game, and drop a shout out to Tex on his page. I'm sure many of those retrogamers know of Tex, or would appreciate a unique game such as ours.

I think that while the pitch video is awesome, it does not properly convey the entire Tex experience.
A person in the IRC channel I frequent really liked the pitch and was wondering if it was all FMV, he then went to think that it's 'Myst style' (pre-rendered slideshow), he really didn't think there were that many 3D realtime games back in 1994... I had to fetch him a link to YouTube video to show him that it's realtime 3D. So now he's going to try and play a couple of games (and hopefully I added one more backer, he donated to other projects pretty generously).
I think we need a second pitch video (nothing extravagant, just CJ and/or AC chatting to the camera with some basic editing) that shows more of the gameplay experience which is expected, it can include a tech demo for one of the new locations for Project Fedora if the team had the time to make one, or show what was done in the previous games, I know people can YouTube for this, but people are often lazy...
I remember having so much fun looking above, below, and behind locations in the virtual environment (and feeling so great when I found a clue!), and this gameplay aspect is really missing in the current pitch...
Also, a small virtual tour showing the Big Finish Games offices can't hurt I think (to show there is an actual team in place, but this is assuming most of the work is done there and not outsourced...).

second pitch video I agree, we need one that specifically addresses the gameplay portion now. We're at 50% almost so it'd be worthwhile to show us what the other half of the game will look like. Just a minor demo for like 5 mins would be fine of just the 3D interactive environments.
Given the game comes out early next year, I'd assume we're at least at a stage where the game's engine can be shown right?.
