"ERROR: Error Code Does Not Indicate An Error"
Funny I hadn't noticed it before now...

Jerry Dan wrote:It's an integrated sound card that came with my Dell Dimension 2400. System info shows two different devices, the first of which is named "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" manufactured by Microsoft. The other one is SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio by Analog Devices, Inc. SoundMAX is the only one I've ever seen in any settings I have to tweak, like the mixer. I am guessing that they control the harware and software aspects, respectively.
The Unimodem audio device is for modem audio functions. The SoundMAX is the chip that your system uses for sound playback. Unfortunately, SoundMAX chips are common as they are a cheap, integrated sound solution and have NO MIDI synth capabilities whatsoever. The only device listed would be the GS synth you mentioned - an MS software synth based on the Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas. However, the synth is implemented in a newer driver model (WDM) compared to the old driver models in use when Overseer shipped (VXDs). They also went through a different interface (Media Control Interface - or MCI).

In short, I'm not sure people playing on XP would be able to get MIDI music at all due to the fact that the game was not written with the newer MIDI devices/driver models in mind.

As I recall, this is why the newer Yamaha Soft Synths (written for Win XP/2K) won't work with Overseer, wheras the older Windows 9x Soft Syths from Yamaha work as they use the old VXD drivers that MIDI synths used back then, along with MCI.

The only way I can think of that MAY let you listen to the Overseer music, is to get hold of a MIDI interface card (MPU-401 compatible) with and attach a Keyboard/module to that.

But don't quote me.
