Tex Murphy Character Question

Bafitis wrote:Anyone know if Nilo is coming back or if there is anything written that has to do with Nilo???
In the Meltdown radio show they said this:
Are you still going to be bringing back the landlord?

Chris: Working with him, Nilo, yeah I love Nilo.

Meltdown Radio: I love him too but I gotta say comradery is not his strongest point.

Chris: No it isn't but it's charming in it's own way, I mean there is a relationship there and you would like to continue that. So yeah I would love to have Nilo back because he's a great character.

Meltdown Radio: Oh yeah he was, you know what, as douchey as he was I loved him.

Chris: Yeah. I mean that's what made the street so quirky, you know we talk about this and we say OK, as we look at life here there is the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but in our opinion this is the 1 percent of the 99 percent. These are people who don't have a lot of money and are kind of relegated to the worst part of the city but this is their community and this is who they are and you know for all their quirks and for all their problems, they need to get along with each other and rely on themselves to survive in this world.

Meltdown Radio: As soon as we said Nilo the chat just blew up. 7 people in a row were like "OMG Nilo, yeah!"

Chris: (laughs) Well thats good to know because we're actually shooting some footage for Nilo to actually reccomend the Kickstarter. So he'll be thrilled to hear that. We'll get him back as one of these guys who are putting together an endorsement for us.

Meltdown Radio: Ohh! Yes!! Hey can you get him to give a shoutout to me (big red)?

Chris: (sarcastic) Yeah I'll see what I can do

Meltdown Radio: Yeah that means no (laughs)

Chris: (laughs) Well he may of already done his part that's my only problem

Meltdown Radio: Oh OK

However the video never turned up. So I guess like Chelsee / Suzanne who also apparently was going to do a video something may of come up unexpectedly but hopefully he will be in the game. Nothing yet confirmed though.

On a related note of returning characters Chris also said this in that talk show:
Will Ardo be back?
We can always bring Ardo back.
How about Clint or Beek???
Clint is confirmed. Since Beek is played by Doug and he is confirmed to return as Rook then Beek could return but I guess it depends if his character will fit in the next game. I think he could fit in the new dark and dangerous addition to Chandler with severely mutated citizens since he is heavily mutated and hid in the shadows as an informant, but nothing is confirmed yet for Beek as far as I know.
Forgive Me, but without looking through the posts I can't remember who it was that suggested this, but I loved the idea of having James Earl Jones come in as a Holographic Image for the Hint System... But that would be a lot of lines I'm sure, not sure if they'd be able to get him to do all that... He would also have to do regular voice overs for the game, because not all of us will be using the Hint System... I'd play through it after I finished the game just to see each and every hint given by him, but normally I don't like using Hint Systems...
That was me. But it was meant as a joke after some on Kickstarter were suggesting a JEJ sim in addition to a golf sim  Would be funny and cool to see but yeah there are thousands of lines for the hint system so unlikely. They could use some voice synthesizer software instead:
http://www.acapela-group.com/text-to-sp ... -demo.html
http://www.neospeech.com/Default.aspx

In Japan there is even a voice synthesizer called Vocaloid for singing, there have been a few revisions of the English voice using different sources (each voice is done by a real person and made into a digitized database, then for marketing it is turned a "character" / persona, the latest being Oliver), but as it is difficult to create an authentic sounding English database for a singing synthesizer it still sounds a bit muffled and robotic, sounds great for the Portal song though :) They're still bringing out new software and trying to improve it (a "Celtic sounding" singer is rumoured to be upcoming):

Vocaloids have a certain charm if you get used to the digital edge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6PvUbWepTA

I think what they did for the Information Database and You Have a Fax voiceovers is they got someone cheap to speak and then made it digital sounding. I think they said the wife of the sound guy did the Fax voice or something. Still would be a lot of work for the amount of text in the hint system so they would probably be better off using a decent voice synthesizer software and just further robotize it in audio editing software using a filter if necessary.

Yeah I know the Hint System idea is virtually impossible, doesn't mean I don't think it would be awesome... lol
I wasn't sure if it was you or Cub who had suggested it, so I didn't want to name one of you and it end up being the other...

I'd still like to see Lucia Pernell return... She was a great character and a great source of information...
That could be a new building on Chandler Avenue, a Bay City Mirror office... Damn hindsight... No one suggested it so it wasn't on the list...

Maybe they could turn Chandler Avenue into a Block instead of just extending the street... Have it go down a could of buildings past Louie's and then you turn right go up a couple of buildings then turn right again and have it go up to Coit Tower... A nice little Horseshoe City Block... Could put several new buildings in then...

Anyway, I asked somewhere else, but never got an answer, so if someone would be so kind I'd like to know something... I've seen posts where people are talking about a group called The Morlocks...

Morlocks will be introduced in PF. They're heavily mutated outcasts who have a dangerous mini-society.

I'm assuming that Aaron or Chris said this in an interview or something at some point??? I haven't been able to read up or listen to all the interviews that have been given, which is why I missed the mention of The Morlocks at some point... Thanks for the info...

The Morlocks are a 30% stretch goal inclusion. It was first announced on Kickstarter when they announced their stretch goals.
I was thinking last night about some of the lost series actors, I could just imagine "sawyer" runnning the news stand while chelsee was away. Sawyer(josh holloway) would say to tex when he asked for info "what am I a walking encyclopaedic chum" LOL

In the pitch video I notice the end of the street, past Slice O' Heaven / Louie's Brew & Stew, is no longer just immediately piles of trash blocking your way to the left and right and a barricade with more trash piled up behind it. So I wonder if some new businesses will be at the very end there either side of the barricade or next to the pizza place/Louie's.

Of course there's still also the other unused parts of Chandler like between Louie's and the Electronics Shop. Also there was just a wall I think next to the Warehouse. And of course there were some businesses around Coit Tower.

Here are snapshots from the pitch video with higher contrast / sharpening and some arrows pointing to things of interest.

In this scene as the camera follows the police patrol speeder you see the end of Chandler and how there are some buildings either side of the barricade and how the road seems to split left and right. And of course the clearer dark expanse behind the barricade fence instead of just piled up trash. Would be interesting if the "dark and dangerous" part of Chandler with the severely mutated citizens ("Morlocks"?) will be past the barricade (after you make or find a gap in it).

In this shot Tex is standing at the very end of Chandler looking back at Louie's. It looks like the street carries on up past Louie's and there is a hint of a building further up that way with purple lighting which suggests there may be some buildings in use that way.

Man, I really can't wait to walk around an expanded, HD Chandler Ave.
I want Lucia Pernell back, but I think the San Francisco locations should stay in San Francisco, because Tex isn't a magnet. Tex's contact in the Police Station could be Commisioner Drysdale as he is mentioned in two Tex games and it would be interesting to see him on screen. Another character that Doug plays that I'd like to see back is Sal Lucido. He certainly has some beef with Tex and just seeing him in a photo doesn't do it justice. I also want to know about the fate of Wanda Peck.
Lucia Pernell! Yes! I really liked her and her attitude. I wished it was at option to have Tex date her in Pandora. They'd make such a great pair.
Haha, I liked Lucia, too, but the actress who played her was kind of stiff.
That's what I liked about her. She's so... ಠ_ಠ

Apologies for having missed it... I don't know though, I think creatures like that would be stretching things a bit... I don't mind having more hideous mutants, but to stretch it to almost zombie like creatures would be a bit much for our Tex world, in my opinion...
Bjyman wrote:I want Lucia Pernell back, but I think the San Francisco locations should stay in San Francisco,
Yes I would love for Lucia Pernell to return as well... Was The Bay City Mirror really in San Fran though??? I know it is a San Fran newspaper, but is it in the New City or the Old City??? Couldn't they have a branch office on Chandler Avenue??? That would be really kewl if Lucia was part of the neighborhood...
Frogacuda wrote:Haha, I liked Lucia, too, but the actress who played her was kind of stiff.
I think that was the point... I mean if they wanted her a different way, with people like Adrian Carr and Barry Corbin on set I'm sure they could have directed her to be the way they wanted, in this case I think this is the way they wanted her... I thought her character was awesome, she gave Tex a run for his money in the quick-wit and snappy comebacks department... Their scenes were great...

Yeah I am curious how it will be handled. In the stretch goal video it said they are "so severely mutated they are known as Morlocks". If they are just "known as" but not "literally are" then it may be that will just be severely mutated and it is a nickname. However it also said that where they reside would be a dark place where Tex is in constant danger. So its likely they have succumbed to radiation so much that they have lost their humanity and lash out. But since Tex fought for Mutant rights in the past, I think it wouldn't fit his character so much to just go massacering them all (if up until now in previous games they have stayed away in there own area it seems kinda rude  ). I'd like it if he just tried to avoid them as stealth mission gameplay to get past and maybe reach some heavily mutated shadowy informants who live on the other side of the dark and dangerous part in a place a speeder can't land. They did say in the Reddit:
it's pretty likely we'll end up using an engine that could also be used for an FPS. But our game, of course, will not be an FPS.
And:
Question: I suppose in parts like that, parts which will appear very sparingly, you could have a first person hand-to-hand combat type scenario?

Answer: I'm not sure how far we would go in that direction. We want to meet our fans' expectations.
So based on that I am hoping it will be handled in a clever creative way than just running through gunning down or punching up "monsters".

Though a little niggly part of me wonders about it being added as a "stretch bonus". I have read Aaron mention that Tex "may get a new gun" (hopefully he loses it in another funny way) but that at no point in the main story will he "be using a lethal firearm on a human being.". Still wonder about stretch / bonus additions though. In that maybe it could be another optional "game within a game" for those who would like the shootouts back from Mean Streets (since they also said "Tex will be in constant danger on these Mean Streets"). But UAKM onwards seemed like a reboot/revision of the character so personally I'd rather the Mean Streets shootouts appear as an arcade minigame than a proper addition to Chandler. I didn't mind the shooting range etc. in the Blade Runner adventure game but somehow I feel Tex as a sharpshooter wouldn't suit the direction the character has taken, I like how he is more in the vein of detectives like Columbo who don't carry a gun.

But everyone has a different opinion of course, if I remember right a "Gun Shop" is one of the possible locations on the poll for Chandler which was collected from fan suggestions. :(

EDIT: Oops now I did the misquoting thing! Too much copy-pasting  Changed the second quote name to be correct.

Yeah, maybe they are habitual thieves or something and Tex needs to sneak into their area {on more than one occasion} to steal whatever items back... And you have to set up distractions and traps, similar to how we had to deal with the Chameleon, but more elaborate of course and without killing them if possible...

And then Tex ends up discovering {maybe when he gets captured} that they aren't as monster like everyone has made them out to be, and to escape {or be let go} Tex has to make a deal with the person that has become their leader or something and bring back something that has been taken from them...
Call it a Side-Quest or something and in the end Tex gains them more freedom and acceptance...

A place a Speeder can't land... Well that could be a lot of places... Underground is the first place that comes to mind... A serious of caves or maybe that blockade in the sewer gets cleared out and they are beyond that... A rocky terrain with sharp rock outcroppings all over the place perhaps, maybe deep in a forest covered area...
Too many possibilities...

As for the return of a firearm to Tex's hands... I don't want Tex to kill anybody, that's first and foremost... When I first started playing Tex the first thing that came to mind was MacGyver... The fact that Mac could get out of anything or anywhere without killing anyone was always the turn on for making me watch every episode...
I do however feel that they should have ended the show with Mac's retiring because he had finally killed somebody and he just couldn't go on doing the work, but that person that he killed would have been none other than Murdock... To finally end the conflict between the two of them... It would have ended with Mac standing in a Morgue with whoever else, Pete of course, looking over the body of Murdock and Pete says something about it finally being over and then Mac say's yeah you're right, I quit, I'm retiring Pete I can't do this no more... And then they have it end the same way it did before with him riding off into the sunset with his Son... Because the whole Murdock's death was never confirmed and I didn't like the fact that it ended with the possibility of him still being out there, they never found his body...

Anyway back to Tex, I wouldn't mind Tex getting a gun and I really wouldn't mind one or two shootouts, but the shootouts wouldn't lead to deaths, except maybe with Tex's of course if you don't do the scene right to get out of it... Let me see if I can paint a picture of a shootout scene for you:
Tex ends up behind whatever cover, be it a Speeder or Dumpster or whatever... Lets put up 3 gunmen... One is up on a Fire Escape, so to get rid of him you have to shootout the support areas that holding the Fire Escape to the wall so that it falls and the guy ends up knocked out from the fall... Next is a behind some stuff with a Speeder sitting at the corner of everything he is behind, you have to fire at the Speeder a few times to finally cause an explosion so that the guy runs away... The third guy could be standing underneath some sort of balcony or large marquee sign or something and you shoot it out to fall on him...

I'm sure more creative minds can come up with much better scenarios...

But to have Tex blasting people away, No I am totally against that...

OR, if they choose to do the same as Pandora where you can be on the different paths, maybe killing someone would immediately put you on the bad path and because of that Tex's attitude changes and he just can't come back to being the good old P.I. everyone knows and loves so Tex just continues on his bad path... But if you want to remain good then you get rid of the gunmen in a similar style as I described above...

This could cater to both types of player, us traditional types that would never want to see Tex kill anyone and then these new age gamers who want to blast someone the first chance they get... Those of us here would go on talking about how terrible that path is to play and whatnot while those FPS addicts praise the shootout scenes...
