G-4 Top 100 Games Ever Created...

Mr. Thomas Malloy wrote:I can safely say Final Fantasy 7 was my favorite, simply because I didn't know what a Final Fantasy was before I started playing it, wondering ... if it were so final, how in the world was there six of them before this?
haha true. I wonder why I wasnt more concerned about it being the 7th in a series. Maybe the back of the box did a good job of making it sound like the adventure started from there and you didn't need to of played previous ones. I didn't know about "Final Fantasy" either back then, probably due to the way things were released here.
I asked for it for Christmas because the video on TV made it look like a movie game. I didn't know it was going to be turn based fights and crap.
I remember I saw it on the shelf and checked out the back of the box and thought the screenshots looked amazing and like nothing I had seen before. I also liked the synopsis of the story on the box with its dystopian scifi-fantasy themes (Midgar city etc.). It was likely part of why I also liked Tex Murphy. I didn't even have a Playstation console. I think I had not long gotten a PC (so I could play Little Big Adventure which I saw someone playing and was really impressed. Then of course I was able to play Tex Murphy etc.). So it was tough to then get a new console at that time, but eventually I did and wow what an experience :)
To this day, its one of the few games I've beaten more than once and absolutely obliterated all the content for. (Including the Emerald and Ruby Weapon ... talk about epic boss battles)
Same, though my save files got screwed up so I never really did everything I could (get knights of the round and beat those darn optional bosses). It was great there was so much stuff you could do in the game that wasn't essential to the plot but added to the experience.
Now I've played 8 and 9 and beat those, and also beat 10, but thats where the series stopped for me, because I moved onto the Xbox and never looked back. I'm betting some of the newer Final Fantasy's are pretty slick, and I'd probably be interested in them... but nothing would interest me more, or have my money come out of my pocket quicker than a fully voiced, remastered in HD FF7. Keep hoping for this.
As for post-FF7 games:
  • After 7 I kept checking out the latest articles, trailers etc. for FF8. I was dissapointed in the way the magic/skill system was in it etc. But I still enjoyed the epic story and beat the final boss a few times to watch that final movie.
  • FF9 was great with some interesting characters and a nice return to a more traditional fantasy theme.
  • FF10 is at the top of many peoples lists but for whatever reason it just did not appeal to me sadly, I will have to give it another fair chance but I found I wasnt as drawn in by the characters and premise at the start, didnt much like the magic/skill system or blitzball games etc.
  • FF11 - MMORPG so didnt bother.
  • FF12 the characters were bland to me (I heard they intentionally experimented with not making 1 character stand out above the rest as a main character but I think that kind of fell flat in the end for me in making them all seem 'background'), I really liked the MASSIVE and detailed world itself though, that made it enjoyable.
  • I haven't yet played FF13, I've heard its more linear which compared to FF12's world sounds like a stepdown but will give it a fair chance.
It may seem like pandering to the fans but I would LOVE a FF7 remaster too. They seem to go back and forth on rumors about doing it though. So unless I see a widescale announcement I'm not getting my hopes up. :?

I bet if they put it on kickstarter they'd have the funds in 24 hours.
I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.

lol yeah. Unfortunately I don't think funds are the issue. I believe they said they won't because of handling other projects and focusing on other titles. Some more on the Wiki page here:

I don't get G4 anymore since Direct TV stopped carrying it. Didn't like it mush either,e xcept for X-play. I preferred it when it was Tech TV.
I liked FF-8... Although I haven't played too many of them... I think I missed/skipped FF-7...

MegaMan better make the list somewhere... Now there's a game I'd like to see make a comeback... I could go for some New MegaMan stories...

I don't put much stock in these lists either, because as most of you have said, it's all in personal choice... I like watching/reading them just to see if there is something that I haven't played that looks really good...

I went on the G-4 website and I ended up clicking on something where it told me to name my favorite 5 games, I typed in Pandora Directive and it didn't even have it as an option, so I typed Tex Murphy, again not an option... So I'm not holding much hope of it making their list at all, unfortunately...

Dunno if you've already played all of them but there are 10 MegaMan games plus a lot of spinoffs. Dunno if anything new is coming out (according to Google some were planned but cancelled or delayed).

Anachronox is awesome!!
Chrono Trigger, I think, was one of the best SNES role playing games.
Then FF6.

I thought FF6 was better than 7 personally, but 7 was revolutionary and amazing too. I have been playing them since FF1 in the nintendo days. I was about 8 when I played it in 1990.

As far as the remake of FF7, I read that the reason was because to do a game with the graphics of 13 would be almost impossible with todays technology. The graphics would take to long to do with such an open world... which is why 13 was more linear. Maybe in the future when they can get a big enough team together and technology moves a bit forward. Don't forget storage space.... it would be quite a few blu rays to make that entire world and there would be way too much swapping, I think.

Anyway, that is what I read previously.

Never played mother 3, but loved Earthbound. There is a translation patch for Mother 3 that you can apply to a rom. Buy the import and then translate the rom and it is legal.

I liked FF VI and VII, but have to say that I preferred VI a bit. Of course, I have a soft spot for the original FF because it was the first one I played. I remember the agonizing wait for it to be released and then the awesomeness it provided.
Quick note on why it was called Final Fantasy. It was the last game that Squaresoft was going to make, knowing that if it wasn't a hit, they were bankrupt, so the lead designer (who's name I forget) decided to name it Final Fantasy as he figured it would be the last game. Then, unexpectedly, it did incredibly well and started the blockbuster series we all know and love today(well some of us...and only for some games).

My favorites are 6,7, and 10. Though I'm playing 4 right now on my PS Vita and it's pretty awesome too.

As far as Greatest 100 games list goes, I see like 5 of these every year and it always depends upon the publication, and the top five games, if they're doing all consoles and PC, tend to have one mario bros. game, half-life 2, a final fantasy game, maybe a zelda game, and one wild card to show that they're not that predictable.

I bet Planescape: Torment will make the list. It always does, and I, for one, think it totally deserves. Best written RPG EVER! Better than any other western or Japanese title, hands down.
Planescape was so sad.... Great Game!!!

You playing FF4 the complete story? Isn't that a psp game? PSP games can be played on the vita??? I am confused with this one... explain.

I have it for the psp.... this version of the game rocks. Best one out there. Way better than the DS version.

I am planning on playing the psp one soon, myself.

Did I just notice post after post here saying that FF6 was really great, and more so than 7? Well, me too :)

There must be a reason for this.
  • ·The music was great
·The story was much more coherent than FF7 (lifesteam, aliens, BS)
·The story was told better, starting small, getting bigger, then getting to a very low point for the heroes before an epic third act
·The characters themselves were generally better. None were whiny emos.
·It was a true ensemble where the story wasn't about any one (spiky haired blond male) person, giving the events leading up to the ending much more impact because everyone involved has something personal at stake and a reason to be there
·Much more compelling main villains (you actually see Kefka do phenomenally evil things)
    ·Better magic system
That has to be it. Story and characters. No wonder more Tex fans choose FFIV.

Although I still did like FF7.

On Vita, when you log on to the Playstation Store, there are a number of PSP titles that you can buy and download to play on the Vita. Final Fantasy IV (the complete set) and Final Fantasy Tactics are the two FF titles there right now. Hopefully they'll release more PSP games. That would be great to have access to the entire library of the PSP as well.

All just preference really, each have their own merits :) I'm not that fond of FF10 right now but if someone says to me "I like FF10 more than FF7" thats cool, I know its just a difference of preference in the end.

Still here's my thoughts with FF7 (not comparing it to FF6 just saying how I feel about the music etc. when taken into account by itself). MAJOR SPOILERS:

- I felt FF7 did the building story thing OK. You start off as just a small rebel group trying to fight back against a big corporation and then it gradually builds from there.

- I really like the music. Oddly I am not that fond of everyones favourite "One Winged Angel", I thought them chanting the villains name was a bit over the top lol. I actually love the boss music and Aeris' theme way more.

- I liked the characters, though some more than others of course. I actually like Yuffie more than some of the others even though many dislike her haha, she was always in my team! I think each of them had their own reason to be there, as at one point they all part ways before the final battle to finish up affairs and its their own choice to come back to fight. You get to visit each characters hometown at some point and get their backstory on why they want to pursue saving the world or defeating the main villain.

- Cloud definitely wasn't the only one integral to the plot. If Aeris hadn't sacrificed herself to enter the lifestream (lifestream = basically a Lion King circle of life deal where you become a spirit like Simba's dad) the day wouldn't of been saved for example, as it put her more in touch with the flow of life and gave the final push at the end. And each of the other characters have their roles to play at different parts of the story.

- Sephiroth was seen doing quite a lot of evil stuff. Destroyed a whole village (killing many including the main character's mother and dooming the rest to a life as test subjects), stabbed Aeris through the chest, put to the brink of death many others. There was also Hojo, basically using anyone and anything for his own inhuman experiments and killing or destroying the lives of many in the process, including Aeris' mother.

- Regarding Cloud's personality, I enjoy the FF7 parodies about it (after all its just a game), but can see some valid reasons why he seems withdrawn. You learn through the process of the game that he has suffered some traumatic experiences: hometown burnt to the ground by someone he previously thought of as his hero, in the fire his only family (mother) is killed, then he is taken hostage and tortured for Hojo's genetic experiments where he is deemed a "failure test subject", his close friend is gunned down infront of him etc. So he basically has a breakdown and copes subcosnciously by taking on someone elses persona (his friend who he admired). Throughout the game he gradually comes to realise and comes to terms with that choice consciously. Whilst also being manipulated further by the main villain as a puppet. In the interim he develops a lack of confidence in himself and struggles not to feel guilty after Aeris is murdered infront of him. I can understand not everyone liking him though, still he is a bit more complex than some other FF characters which shall remain unamed (I don't mean any in FF6 though). Plus some of this is only revealed in an optional sidequest (regarding the escape from Hojo etc.).

- I can agree the plot was complex. Some of the backstory you could skip if you didnt bother getting certain characters or going to certain places. Still I felt the story was really epic and you could get the gist overall in an entertaining way. But that if you wanted to there was a lot more you could delve into should you want more detail. I am the type of person though that glazes over films/games that have complex wars though, like I never fully grasp Final Fantasy Tactics story each time I play it, its so long I never finish it though I still enjoy that game and so still really enjoyed FF7. Over time I've delved deeper to get the rest. FF8 I felt was really confusing for me story wise though and it didnt appeal to me as much, even with just the gist. I still enjoyed FF8 though for various reasons.

- For me I LOVED the materia system in FF7. So much customization and combinations you could make.

All just personal opinion though. So not saying anyone should agree with me. Also again not comparing it to FF6 just saying what I thought of FF7 itself.

Having said all that the real reason I enjoyed FF7 is because this is the version I played, obviously there are far inferior versions out there:
