I hate to say this.....

Frankly I had to force myself to choose the gameplay over plot. The reason is that no matter how great the story is (and I love and demand good stores) if the gameplay sucks then it sucks. You can still have a good game with a bad plot if at least the gameplay is fun.

Now if he had "halfway passable gameplay and terrific plot" I would always choose that option.

My brain tells me that I should prefer story over game play. But in practice, it is the other way around for me.

Of the games that I can think of that I didn't complete, they are all because the game play was so difficult. Meanwhile, I can think of other games that had pretty thin or non-existent stories, but since the game play was good, I would always finish them.

So I gotta vote for game play even though I'm ashamed to admit it.

Hmm, interesting thread... It's odd the topic would come up now, especially since I'm actually in the middle of playing Grim Fandango now for the first time as a result of the Adventure Game Thread I started a while back. I gotta say, at first I was a bit lamed out and unmotivated, but as soon as I reached about halfway through the first part I was completely hooked just like the adventure-gaming days. I was a bit rusty to begin with, but I soon got back into my old puzzle-solving mode the next two levels were a piece of cake, and awesomely entertaining. I stopped about a week ago and I almost forgot I didn't finish it until just now when I saw this thread...which reminds me, I need to get back to it :D
