Overseer DVD
Well, my PC will NOT let me play TMO using the CDs. So, just for the heck of it I put in the DVD version. It would not load but it did let me play the game. However, two problems soon surfaced.
1. No cut scenes and/or action sequences (even when examining an object in inventory, i.e. looking at the tape measure). It just skips to the next event required.
2. I cannot save games. Oh, I can click save but it doesn't show any saved games when I try to load a save.
Remember, I am NOT good at this computer stuff, so keep your answers in a language I can understand. Thanks!

I'm sorry. When you put in disc 1 the game loads onto the computer, an icon is created, and under Start is states "new program installed." However, when I insert disc 1 I get an error message stating I cannot play games that are set for MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows. So, I go to My Computer, right click on the Overseer drive, open the Overseer folder, right clicked on Overseer.exe (I think), set to Win95 compatability and the game starts. Now, this happens whether I use the CD disc 1 or the DVD disc. But, I cannot Save a game, which means I would have to play the entire game without stopping. Does any of that make any sense?
BTW, I use to be able to play the CD version on this XP, but something happened and it will not load for me.

OK, here is the message box I get when I insert CD-1.
16 bit window substsem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
I can choose Close or Ignore. Niether works, the game just closes before I even get started.

I'm a bit rusty on this but...
Go to the overseer DVD and find setup.exe. Right click like you did for overseer.exe and set the compatibility to windows 95. Run setup and install overseer. When it asks to install Intel RSX3D say no.
Then go back to the overseer DVD and copy the rsx3d folder to your hard disk. Go to the RSX3D folder on your hard disk and right click the RSXSETUP.exe file. Go to properties and set that to be compatible with win95. Then run RSXsetup.exe. Then you'll need to find the version 1.04 patch for overseer and DVDExpress player. Someone here will have a link to them but I don't I'm afraid.

Okay guys. I have upgraded to XP and decided to upgrade to DVD along with it. I have followed all the instructions here so far including installing the Elcard MPEG-2 Player. Three problems.
First, the video plays fine but there is no sound.
Second, when Tex's office loads there is an error reading "error could not detect error" but the game seems to be running fine.
Third, when I exit the game I get a crash message (yes I have everything on Win95 compatibility).
Please help.

OKay. Here is my update. That annoying error message apparently is an XP thing. As for the sound, I found that the movie sound is playing but it is so low that I can barely hear it. If I manually turn up the sound then TEX starts shouting after the movie is over. I have the movie volume up full. Is there a way to make the in movie and out of movie voices the same volume. I have played around with all the settings I can find and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
did you install the rx 3d sound, test the sound in the config settings in rx3d sound.
Build 247 Release Notes:
1. If you experience loss of digital sound, which is usually followed by random
"popping" from the speakers, RSX audio processing is being overloaded. This
is a known RSX issue with lower-end machines.
Try the following steps:
A. Find and run the configuration utility in the "Intel RSX 3D" folder in the
Windows Start menu.
B. Select the "Advanced Settings - Buffer Times" tab.
C. Change the output audio device buffer from its default 120 milliseconds
setting to a higher one. We suggest 240 milliseconds. 400 milliseconds
is maximum.
D. Select the "Audio Peripherals" tab.
E. Remove the check from the "Use RSX True 3D Sound" check box.
If this fails to correct the problem, go to the Config/Preferences menu in the
Overseer game. Select the "Advanced Preferences" button from the dialog.
Remove the check from the "3D Sound" check box. Reducing the window size
(to 240 x 180, for example) and choosing interlaced "VR Style" may also help.
