Stephen Robert Irwin, better known as The Crocodile Hunter, died today september 4th after having been pierced through the chest by a stingray. The world will be a less colourful place without him.

My television is set to turn on in the morning and wake me up with CNN Headline News, so this was the news I woke up to this morning. Not a great way to start the day. Steve Irwin was a favorite of my college friends and I, to the point of my friend Ethan and I doing a Croc Hunter parody for one of his video projects.
He was a delightfully crazy, yet extraordinarily caring, one-of-a-kind man. A champion for nature and endangered species. Crikey, Steve, you will be missed.

I just saw it. I watch his show all the time on Animal Planet.

It is indeed a sad moment for Australia.
I was at work yesterday afternoon and my girlfriend sent me an SMS saying that Steve Irwin had died as a result of a sting ray attack. I did not beleive her, but alas when I visited the headlines online, there it was.
The report form the video footage says he was not taunting the sting ray, but he was swimming over the top of it, the tail then came up and the barb stabbed him right in the heart. Steve then pulled it out moments before losing conciousness and died shortly after.
Not only did he provide us with hours of entertainment and help shape this countries international identity, but his wildlife conservation efforts were invaluable. We have indeed lost a hero, and thoughts go out to his family and his young children.
