Trying to setup UAKM/Pandora in Win 98SE

Hello, Tex fans
I'm a new guy on the block; my name is Bret - came across this great looking message board while surfing the NET in hopes of finding answers to some setup problems I'm having with two of my recently acquired, Tex Murphy games. And it seems as though I've found the right place.

I recently picked-up UAKM, Pandora Directive and Overseer at a garage sale. I was able to setup Overseer (DVD version) after downloading all the patches, and the game seems to run quite well on my Win 98 system. But I really would like to play UAKM and Pandora Directive before playing Overseer, but I'm having problems with the setup in both UAKM and Pandora. On both games I can't get past the Digital Sound portion of the setup - it will not recognize my SBlive sound card. I know what the settings should be for this card (Sound Blaster Pro I/O=220 INT=5 DMA=1) because I've used the same settings with other games without a problem. I tried using the Auto Detect feature, but it can't find my card. I've already installed the TEX4.EXE patch for Pandora and the TEX197 patch for UAKM, which doesn't seem to have made a difference in either game. Can someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong? I've heard sooooo many good things about the Tex Murphy games, and I'm truly looking forward to playing them in the order in which they were produced.

Many Thanks,
Bret

Sound Blaster Live! cards do not suppoer Sound Blaster Pro emulation properly. All SBLive! cards should have abuilt in Sound Blaster 16 emulator... which means in UAKM and Pandora it should detect your card as a SoundBblaster 16. I myself has the same card and I found it ran fine with SB16 @ 220 - 7 - 1

If this still does not work for you, I will assumethe SB16 emulation is not installed/working properly. If this is the case you will need to un-install and re-instal the sound blaster live driver that came with your card or an update version from the Sound Blaster website.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response, Cub. I tried SB16 @ 220 - 7 - 1 settings as per your suggestion, but didn't have any success with it. I also reinstalled my sound card drivers and updated them, but still no luck. Is there anything else I might try? I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks again for your response - It's well appreciated!

Stuff below is from other posts on this subject that I have mentioned prior. For me I had to "Hack" an AWE32 in order to get 16bit stereo. You first need to add ",1" to the end of each sound board, this tells both UAKM and PD not to verify the sound card. The reason for this is so you can impute your own variables. Thus far what is imputed below works for me. I hope this helps

PS Perhaps for you it will work best if you imput as BoardNum=3 instead of BoardNum=4 which is AWE32

19th. Now actually go to your PANDORA folder and click on CONFIG.INI, use notepad to edit these settings and make these particular parameters set as so. Then save and close the file.

[DIGI_CONFIG]
BoardNum=4
IoAddr=0x220
DMA=5
Int=7
Volume=100
ReverseStereo=No

[MIDI_CONFIG]
BoardNum=2
IoAddr=0x388
DigiDrums=Yes
Volume=60

[CD_MAP]
Disk1=D
Disk2=E
Disk3=F
Disk4=G
Disk5=H
Disk6=I

20th. You can now play the game! Without disc swapping. Just start up D-fend and simply double click your PANDORA profile and it should start it up. ALT+ENTER to start in full screen mode, please note that you should wait until the opening video has finished and the PD menu has popped up. For me if I switch to full screen mode before the opening video is finished my sound is screwed-up and it runs slow.

I hope that answers your questions and if you have any other problems just ask

To fix the CD issue, it should be resolved by opening in the PD installation folder the CONFIG.INI and simply edit [CD MAP] to the proper drive locations and save.
Also if you plan to 'hack' a sound card and you have been encountering trouble in getting 16bit stereo, you need to open the SOUND.INF and place a 1 at the end of each line for the [DIGI_BOARD], this tells the program not to verify the sound card and it works, also for UAKM.
Best of luck, hope that solves the CD mapping issue.
PS edit that stuff in notepad.
