Boxed versions

A DVD medium for the game does not necessary mean DVD quality video. You can quite easily cram a lot of full-HD content onto a DVD disc.

BD is not an option for the game in my opinion. It rules out Xbox and PC as platforms. The former because it simply does not support it, and the latter because only a small percentage of people have BD drives on their PCs.

A couple of DVDs would work well. No disc swapping needed, because they can opt to install most of the content onto the user's HDD, which is what most games do nowadays anyway. The discs are really only used to authenticate the game upon launch.

Hey :P I'm in my 20s!
I know you're joking but since I have all the other Tex Murphy games boxed from when I was a kid I kind of see it as completing a set. Kind of like when people buy Special Collector's editions of films etc. It's not something I'd do for other game series though (except maybe my other childhood PC favourite, Little Big Adventure) :)

Anyway as mentioned in the thread, DVD is likely since in the PC gaming market Bluray gaming isn't feasible. As Cubase says, XBox 360 still uses DVD too (although some rumors say the next XBox might be getting Bluray but won't be out for a good while yet). PS3 was ahead of the game since they had a vested interest in wanting people to adopt Bluray over HD-DVD during the format wars it seems.

Though personally I think the XBox version might just be an online shop downloadable purchase or something like with the PS3 PSN than a boxed disc. Because I'm not sure if they would get the money back in the current market for Xbox, same for if it had been coming to PS3. I'm not saying the market isn't there for it, just that there doesn't seem to of been that many Adventure game releases in recent years on consoles. But I still think its good Tex is being released there, so that those who DO want those types of games on Xbox etc. have the option, plus less competition in the genre there. However it might be a bit of a risk to budget in discs/packaging and brick and mortar distribution.

Sai, I doubt the Xbox version will be on-line distribution purely becuase the size would be huge thanks to the FMV.

Even today's biggest games are not that big in terms of capacity becuase most of them are real-time 3D, which takes very little physical data. Video (and HD video which is what the guys will be opting for) takes up quite a lot of data in comparison. Couple this with the fact that it will have more video than your average game, and you will end up with a huge payload.

Example: 7 years ago Myst IV: Revelation has a lot of FMV, but it was only SD. But still the install payload was in excess of 7GB

True but then they are also considering an Android tablet version and some are wondering how they will manage to squeeze it down to a tablet app in the store. I don't know much about it (don't have a tablet yet, though I'd love one) but I remember some debate on the Kickstarter comments page about codecs and compression options for tablets. They did say that the PC version would be their first consideration during development then other releases later. So I think there is a chance that other releases might be different and need more compression tricks, interface changes and other such alterations.

I agree the engine itself wouldn't be the meat of the space, FF13 for PS3 was 40GB and maxed out a Bluray disc, 32.6 GB of which was 1080p HD video. Though a lot of console (both PS3 and Xbox) games release at 720p only despite the higher capability, seems the amount of 1080 games for Xbox are still very slim pickings, so they may not go the full 1080 for Xbox but hopefully will for the PC version.

I doubt they will use 1080P, even thought I wish they would. 720P seems more likely as it provides good quality video, but requires less horsepower to run. At the same time this would work well with the 720P standard that both the Xbox and PS3 seem to lean towards, despite both being 1080P capable devices.

In terms of the Andriod release. I have a suspicion that they went for that idea because technically they "could" do it, but probably did not fully weigh out the ramifications. It would indeed need to undergo a huge compression of data, especially in the video, which would more likely be downsized to SD. However, SD on a mobile or tablet device will still look good, compared to a PC, so it should be be that bad. However, I also fear that the omitting of certain FMV content may be required to make the game's mobile payload a lot more practical.

Horsepower won't matter I reckon, since PC gamers have likely accepted that if they want to do gaming they need to get the latest specs when they get a new PC. Most games that come out on PC seems to try and max things out and push the barrier each time, like Crysis 2 did in 2011 which was 1080p as far as I know (never played it but remember a lot of people wondering if they could run it at max at the time).

With PC games you can always go into the Options too and reduce or switch off certain aspects to run at either Low, Medium or High quality if the system specs can't max it out. Even if I would hope not to have to due to costs, most PC games seem to force you to upgrade if you want to run on the Highest settings. But since this game won't be an FPS where you need to care about even milliseconds of lag that is barely noticeable by the naked eye but screws up shooting, it'll maybe not be that demanding even with the graphics overhaul.

I guess I'm likely going to have to get a new graphics card if I want to max it out since I have a Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT and from reading around it'd only be able to handle higher end games on lower settings :( I wonder if I'd have to upgrade the processor too.... I got Quad CPU and 4GB RAM back at the end of 2009 in the hope it'd last a good amount of years and not be outdated the next year but I guess at 2.50GHz or whatever it might not be enough for some things. I have no idea about current system requirements of games since mostly what I've been using it for are indie games or 2D games. Guess I'll see whenever they release the system spec requirements next year.

The console releases won't affect the PC release at all though (e.g. 720p being the common standard) so no worries there what TexBox tends to do. :D

Hey Guys,
We just wanted to clarify - “Project Fedora” will be developed with PC’s in mind, with any ports coming after the fact.
