120% tex stretch

Matthew Buckstein wrote:I hope this possible "musical number" is along the lines of Lucy Luv in Pandora, or maybe a lounge singer scene, or else some sort of extra that you can watch outside of the gameplay. While I enjoy a good musical, someone randomly breaking out in song just doesn't fit in a Tex Murphy game.

Looks like it is going to literally be a musical musical  Will it just be an easter egg?

I sure hope so. Or some sort of bonus feature.
I will also accept dream sequence or hallucination.

I do like the humour in the Tex games but I think we also have to be considerate of this appealing to a wider market than just Tex fans. We may find it funny and be forgiving if the characters burst out into song suddenly but I think others will be more critical. I don't want this game to just be a final sendoff for the fans only... But the start of a full Tex revival. Some said in the comments the musical number is a great idea because "every Tex game needs cheesiness" eep.... Considering the FMV bad rep I don't think "cheesiness" should be an aim :( Tex can be funny without it being "cheesy" (all this mention of cheese is making me think of Cheezits).

I think best as a easter egg or bonus rather than in the main story.

Look, it's going to be cheesy either way, but if it's cheesy in a fun way, people will enjoy it, and if it's cheesy and serious, it will just come off melodramatic and won't appeal to anyone. Tex needs to be somewhat comfortable with its B-movie vibe, and play that up as a strength, because it's stuck with it either way.

Also, I don't know why you think hardcore Tex fans are the only ones who like to laugh. Gaming's lost it's sense of humor in recent years, and the games that defy that, like Portal 2 or Double Fine's games, are always warmly met by critics and fans alike.

In fact, I really think the humor in this campaign appealed to a lot of people, including a lot of backers who never played a Tex game before, and I think they'd be really disappointed if we got a deadly serious game.
I agree. After all computer games are a form of escapism. If it's such a dark and dreary world, who'd want to hang out there all the time. I was attracted to Tex by the great bouts of humor in UAKM. They toned it down in Pandora but still had funny parts. I think the AC&CJ know how to balance the best of both worlds (drama and humor).

I'm guilty of pushing for a musical number every chance I had. But really, every respectable cartoon has embraced the wonders of musical numbers! It's about time games do the same! Who can seriously say Futurama's wasn't an absolute blast. They used a Visi-Sonor, for crying out loud!

I imagine it will be an easter egg, like the basketball cutscene. And why not! Hidden gems like this can only bring good times. Who doesn't remember Deus Ex' hidden ''Dev Party'' ending?

Can you imagine how awesome Grim Fandango would've been with a full musical number? Hell! That gives me an idea! Grim Fandango, The Musical!

Let's make this happen!

Don't get me wrong, I want the humour! Like I said "Tex can be funny without being cheesy". I guess I just dislike that term "cheesy". The Tex games have a wonderful variety of humor and "cheesy" feels to me like a bit of a dishonour to the great comedic timing of Chris and Aaron's great humour in his writing etc.

Definition of "cheesy":
Cheap, unpleasant, poor quality, shoddy or blatantly inauthentic
Tex needs to be somewhat comfortable with its B-movie vibe, and play that up as a strength, because it's stuck with it either way.
I wouldn't consider Tex games as having a "B-movie" vibe, or at least in later games they seemed to get stronger in this sense including Chris himself getting stronger and stronger as Tex. From interviews Chris/Aaron seem to say they improved "geometrically". I agree I wouldn't want it to be overly serious and Pandora seemed to strike some balance. I like Under A Killing Moon though. I want to see another funny piano song from Chris :)

I would be dissapointed too and I certainly don't think Tex fans are the only ones who would want to laugh.... I guess I came across wrong. As I said I want the humour. I liked the great comedy moments in UAKM like Tex throwing his gun out the window etc. I loved the balance between comedy and drama too in Pandora and its great that there will be more humour, like what was in the Radio Theater etc. I enjoy adventure games with humour like Monkey Island, Space Quest etc. I guess I am just curious how it will be implemented and I think there can be discussion/debate on that point without necessarily having it mean the idea itself is wrong.

I agree, but still was kinda curious on specifics. I guess curiosity killed the cat though...

Anyway I love comedy "unlikely" detectives like Columbo, Inspector Clouseau and Murder She Wrote etc. Its just they dont tend to break into song so I wondered how itd be woven in. As others say it'd fit nicely as a easter egg or something. I did say a few times you could be investigating a trash can and have it trigger and that it'd be funny if so. So I did consider something along the lines of the basketball scene etc. I'm really sorry if it came across like I was saying "OMG DONT FRIGGIN PUT THAT IN I POO POO ON THAT IDEA. &%!* LETS GET SERIOUS GAWD!" ....

As I'm not the only one curious I figure it's a good question for the countdown questions round, if people know how it'll be placed in the game maybe more would pledge up for it at the last moment if they are on the fence about it? Some are curious in the Kickstarter comments too.

Don't feel guilty. I'm truly truly sorry. It seems like I've come across all wrong? :(

It's a great idea that is getting people to up their pledges what could be bad about that? I was just curious on the implementation really...

I mean I did do Avenue Q musical lyrics with Rook and Clint above  I'm a bit dissapointed noone's commented on that actually haha. I havent actually seen Avenue Q though except on Youtube since it doesnt tour here but it looks great. Also I went to Spamalot the Musical (and I had to walk through one of the worst blizzards in UK history to get to it too) so I do like funny musicals :)

Don't forget when tex goes through the ceiling as a kid and him ripping his cheque that Gordon gives him right after saying "Things are finally looking up" hehe

I think the musical number in the credits like shrek would work great.

Yeah :) And the dog poop in Rusty's in Pandora. And cigarette mishaps and many other things. The humour is great and it wouldn't be a Tex Murphy game without it. It's all about the placement and execution I think. Some suggest a dream sequence, hallucination, easter egg trigger, bonus feature, end credits etc. I like end credits like the Portal song or easter egg / bonus personally :) It seems others are curious here, on other forums and on Kickstarter comments too.

What I meant by non-Tex fans or newcomers is that they might be more critical about the placement and execution of stuff like that with live actors/FMV (like the discussion about non-fans not being as forgiving about the controls), not that they won't want the humourous aspect. Some on Kickstarter were thinking of other live actor musicals such as High School Musical where they break into song you see etc. If confirmed by the staff the direction they'll go in then if anyone is on the fence about it as a stretch goal they may pledge up in support of it if they know how it'll be implemented. Theres always PayPal after the Kickstarter ends :D
