Silent Hill - the movie

I went to see Underworld-Evolution today. During the previews before the movie, one of the coming attractions was for a Silent Hill, which some of you may recognize as a FPS/Adventure game. So another computer game gets made into t movie.

I've never played it, but my nephew tells me it's pretty scary.
I downloaded the trailer for the Silent Hill 4 game and that was pretty scary! Then I played the demo when it came out, and I did not like it purely becuase I don't like the Japanese style controls, which I found a common thing amoungst all Japanese titles. Had an interesting atmosphere though, all the same.

I only hope Silent Hill is not directed by Uwe Boll!

1. Silent Hill is not an fps/adventure, but survival horror. Unlike Resident Evil...it's genuinely scary.

2. It's not tainted by Uwe Boll. Uwe has a new movie coming out with his taint all over it. Bloodrayne.

You want to see a scary gameification (I invented that word, y'hear?!), take a look at Dead or Alive. It's like... Hero meets Charlies Angels.

Speaking of games to movies... I'm getting anxious to see Final Fantasy: Advent Children. Please give!

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!

Agreed! Bring it on!

The trailer for the film, which is based on the first game in the series, features a character called Pyramid Head. Anyone who knows the series recognizes him from the second game, and the appearance of the character in the story of the first game puts in somewhat at odds with the game series' continuity.

Maybe they are going to combine the first/second game's storylines into one group of characters for the sake of film sequels? I suppose they would have to shake things up a bit in order to provide some surprises to people who have played the games and know the plots already.

Hey Cub,

I don't know if I've ever played any Japanese titles. What are Japanese style controls?
Well if they do Silent Hill as well as they did Resident Evil, i'll be proud. I mean that in the fact that i think the movie caught the feel of the game nicely.

Oh and Advent Children rocks. It was made to make fans drool, but that being said, it still rocks. ^^
1. It's only suvival horror if you're a big buzzword fan. Otherwise it can fall into a couple of genres depending on your liking.

(Prepare for a possible triple negative) Not only is the film NOT being done by Boll, it's being done by a guy who purports to be a fan of the series. From the noise filter and ultra-faithful feel of the limited teaser, I actually might believe him.

Next, Pyramid Head is the only obvious addition from the second game, and that's actually fitting. The story is almost all based on part one, and it'd be really hard to justify most of two since almost all of the experience was relative to the state of mind of the protagonist. While even the monsters' shapes represented a part of the main character's psyche, Pyramid Head was an outside source of punishment, based on the old executioners depicted in a painting. Thus, using them in a story based on the first game is totally okay.
Yep, but we don't want to SPOIL it for anyone who hasn't played through the game yet, do we...

::Looks at his brand spanking new Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams game sitting on the table, and then back at the latest post ... long pause ... and then he darts off to his room to cry::

No, I'll still be playing it, but now it's like I think I know a lot of what the big *twist* is going to be. ::giggles with a grumble thrown in afterwards, and storms off::

:D  :D
I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.

Well, it's kind of hard to explain... the control system in the Silnt Hill games (alongwith most other Japanese titles) is just... weird.

Not quite character relative, and not quite environmentally relative... a mix of both. In my opinion they are pretty hard to get used to. Especially on a PC keyboard and mouse. It might be okay on a console though, but I have never tried them like that.

I enjoyed Silent Hill 1. It's the only horror type game I've really played. I got partway through Silent Hill 2 but then life got too busy.... I still bought Silent Hill 3 though and eventually I'll get 4 and one day I'll actually get gaming time to actually play them rather than watch them collect dust.

I might go see the Silent Hill movie but I'm not really a horror film person..... (neither am I much of a horror game person but Silent Hill is mysterious and interesting). I saw a nifty pic of it in someones forum signature so I was like ooh. I hope it doesn't rely too much on knowing plot from the games however since I haven't played any for years sadly.... Then again maybe it'll'spoil' plot from the games too. But I imagine with Silent Hill it'd be easy to make an entirely different story.
To be honest I didn't fully know what was going on in Silent Hill 1 anyway :)

Spoilers? *avoids that post like the plague* :D

I've beaten 3, that was fun and spooky (manaquin room, nuff said).

I have 1 which i bought at a used game shop and haven't touched yet.

i've rented 2 and 4. They were spooky and enjoyable for the short time i played them.

A good series all round in my opinion.

Resident Evil is for people that want to blast and avoid zombies and fight giant animals.

Silent Hill is for people that want the granola scared out of them. :D
Well, needed to bring in some clarification because speculation in here is pretty scattershot at best.

I'm not going to get too upset if I just spoiled something very minor from what is now a five-year-old game.

Like they said in Penny Arcade, have you seen The Passion yet? Here's a spoiler; Jesus dies.
