New FMV-game in production
Hey all!
I just thought I'd tell a bit about a discovery I made just recently. I don't know if it has been mentioned before on this board but if so - please pardon me for mentioning it again.
It seems that the Hungarian developer Private Moon Studios is soon to release a new FMV historical adventure game called Yoomurjak's Ring. The game will have more than 35 professional actors on more than 30 locations. As of now there is no word of an English release, but it will be released in Hungary around May of 2006. Perhaps the FMV-genre isn't quite dead after all, huh?
Anyway - check out the following links for more information:

Thanks for the info netroam, nice to see FMV games still in production.
With all the movies out these days and all the pushing towards providing choice through digital mediums (like being able to select whatever show you want to watch) they're missing a neat trick by not providing interactive movie-games... oh well...
The screenshots look good. I wonder how the final game will pan out.
Although is it just me or have they gone a bit over with the gaussian blur (or whatever softening technique they've used) in some of those backgrounds... makes it look kinda blurry

I find it really difficult to get excited about anything FMV. While I am a collector of the stuff, there are maybe four titles that really rated as good games within the genre (half of that number being the last two Tex games. Sorry, but the frozen actors in UAKM knocked it out of the top rung.) Anything after the Black Dahlia/Overseer days hasn't even registered. Tender Loving Care killed the interactive movie the same way Hardline killed the FMV game, and I just haven't heard any better explanation in the last five years to support otherwise.
At any rate, I do hope to see something good come out of this, but I'm not really expecting it.

The game looks interesting... but I still think the FMV falls short, if the screenshots are anything to judge.
What always made Tex Murphy good was the grading and the after effects and all that emphasis they put into the composition of the videos. Most other FMV lacked this... and this title looks the same; shot, edited and simply whacked into the game.
Let's hope I am wrong.

Afraid I haven't seen Point of View. Haven't even heard of it, not that I remember at any rate. I'm certianly willing to believe they could've created a good product, as Tender Loving Care wasn't so much a horrible interactive movie as it was a horrible movie.DrPaul wrote:Hey Vance,
Obviously, you didn't like Tender Loving Care. I have no opinion because I haven't seen it. However, the TLC people did a second one called Point of View.
I wouldn't call it a game, but I quite enjoyed it as an interactive movie. Did you see Point of View?
I think the main problem with TLC was that it didn't amount to much above a crappy erotic thriller you'd expect to see on late night Cinemax. Lots of boob shots and infidelity, one actual spooky scene that was damn effective, and tons of filler and soap opera acting.
Although I enjoyed seeing Beth Tegarden in a nurse outfit, that's more along the lines of my personal fetishes and not really anything I'd call a good scene.
But maybe I'm talking too much about myself again.
I just wanted to tell you about another FMV-game that is in production that looks pretty nice

Not only that but several of the folks from Mystery Science Theater 3000 have roles in the game as well! Although, Darkstar is a huge departure from the MST3K style, and isn't really focused on humor.Vestin wrote:I just wanted to tell you about another FMV-game that is in production that looks pretty nice

Yeah, Darkstar is on my own site's Junk Pile, a list of projects that died or really really look like they're going to.
Basically, filming on that wrapped at LEAST a few years ago and they've been looking for a person to come along and give them money to either finish or distribute it.
The game underwent a ton of changes over the course of production, originally actually being more of a comedy and ending up as what looks like a more futuristic version of Independance Day.
There is another site MST3K fans put up about the game that hasn't been updated in ages: http://mst3k.com/darkstar/index.html
Note the lead actor is different.

The screenshots from Darkstar look nice.
But I'm not that keen on it being all restricted to a spaceship, I feel that can get boring once you've seen the 500th metal coridoor.... If you can go explore alien planets or there are interesting 'engineered' indoor locations then I guess it could be good. Just my personal preference.
