I DID IT!!

Through serious meditation and enormous amounts of sugar and caffeine, I have solved the riddle of the Universe!
By which I mean of course, I got Grim Fandango to work on my regular computer without it crashing, burning, running disjointedly or generally not being the great game it's supposed to be.
I managed to do it thusly:
Step 1) Patch the game
Step 2) Run the game, and during intro, go to options.
Step 3) Ctrl-Alt-Del, choose the GrimFandango.exe process in taskmanager and right-click, choose Set Affinity and make it run on one processor only, by unticking CPU 1. (So CPU 0 is the only checked box left)
Step 4) In-game options menu, turn the 3D Acceleration ON.
Step 5) Quit game in frustration that it doesn't work correctly yet.
Step 6) Swear and curse for half an hour and drink lots of beer and toss empty beer bottles at passerby's in the street outside until they haul your ass away for malicious assault and battery.
Step 7) Start - Run - Dxdiag
Step 8 (that's EIGHT!) In the Display tab - disable Directdraw Acceleration (which also should disable Direct 3D Acceleration. If not, disable Direct 3D Acceleration)
Step 9) In the Sound tab, reduce the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level from Full Acceleration to Standard Acceleration.
Step 10) Run game. Laugh! As Manny spins Glottis in the mechanic tree in the petrified forrest! Shout! When Police Chief Bogen shuts down Manny's joint in Rubacava! Cry! When Domino sends Glottis over the edge of the world! Rejoice! When good triumphs over evil and Manny and Meche gets rejoined!
Step 11) Get out of assault and battery charges by bribing the judge, jury and offended victims.
In fact, skip Step 6 and 11. It will get the game to work that much faster.
Also, no hangovers. Or jailtime. Or lack of money to buy new games because you had to bribe a whole lot of people. Just think, skipping those two steps COULD get you a ticket on the Number Nine itself!

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!

That's what I tried telling my girlfriend .... Too far? Or just too sad?Bafitis wrote:Congrats... Sometimes it's the little things that bring us such pleasure...
Sigh, sorry females of the board.

Wow... that is one thorough solution. I am also very pleased it does not involve pouring Jack Daniels into the disc drive.
I am also very happy becuase running Grim Fandango is something I have been wanting to do for ages. Actually come to think of it it ran fine in XP for me, as long as I did not use Hardware acceleration, which was annoying becuase without it the jaggies are awful! Perhaps I was just spoilt the first time around.
Anyway, good show!

FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need your help getting this to run!!!
The crashing is getting so frequent that it is barely playable and really pissing me off
Step 3) Ctrl-Alt-Del, choose the GrimFandango.exe process in taskmanager and right-click, choose Set Affinity and make it run on one processor only, by unticking CPU 1. (So CPU 0 is the only checked box left)
I don't have this option..... is this cause it is an old single core processor?
Running it on an old 1gig processor with a gforce FX 5200
512 megs of ram
Any help is welcomed to get this to run properly.
Thanks a bunch.

Yes it is.lestat666 wrote:I don't have this option..... is this cause it is an old single core processor?
Have you fiddled with the hardware acceleration as Fred suggested? It´s usually the best bet for older games.
There is a "launcher" for Grim Fandango though (used to start the game, fixes a few issues and adds a few features). I got the game running really well using it a few years ago.
It's available here:

Baf.... if you knew how hard it is to get this gam running without crashing, you would realizeCongrats... Sometimes it's the little things that bring us such pleasure...
this really isn't a small feat at all.
hehehehe.
its annoying.
playing for 5 mins to 10 mins only to be kicked out of the game.
ERRR.
Well, time to try Fred's suggestions.
Matt
I do understand that, I've got games that it took a bit to get running... But at the same time it's still only a game, hardly a necessity in life, so when you think about it, it's still a little thing bringing pleasure...lestat666 wrote:Baf.... if you knew how hard it is to get this gam running without crashing, you would realize

Sorry buddy, all I can offer you for advice is to twiddle with the steps I provided in the OP. For instance, try doing everything like I did (except the dual processor stuff of course) and turn the 3D Acceleration off.
But mostly, I would make sure your gfx-card had updated drivers. This is a small thing that can ruin a lot.
Also, if there's any error messages involved, feel free to share with the rest of the class.
But fool around, try different combinations. Eventually you might just strike gold.
I did.

PS: Baf? Telling someone who is trying to get a beloved game to work that it's a small thing... That's just cruel, dude. Seriously.

If you say so Fred, after all I seem to say something every other week that pisses you off one way or another...Fred Buer wrote:PS: Baf? Telling someone who is trying to get a beloved game to work that it's a small thing... That's just cruel, dude. Seriously.
We've all had games we've had problems loading and some games that we just gave up on because nothing seemed to work, so I sympathize with everyone who is or has ever had problems getting a game to work... But all in all they are just games, we could if we had to, live without them... No different than Tea or Kool Aid, water will keep us alive but we like water with flavor usually... That's all games are, a little added flavor to life...

You don't piss me off.
I just wanted you to see that some people love certain games a bit more than you might realize. What you're doing, is belittling that very personal feeling of love towards a special moment or moments in a person's life. Not to mention that someone is working very hard to relive said moments, and you kind of belittle their efforts as well by diminuating the goal of said efforts.
Please stop taking offense and umbrage at every turn when I try to point something out to you. There's no farmers with pitchforks coming across your drawbridge!

Before you try pointing something out to someone, maybe you should take in the whole story and not just the pieces that seem useful to you at the time...
If you had bothered to read my entire post instead of dissecting what you wanted to use in your pot shot towards me, you would have saw that I too have had problems getting games to work and understand the feelings involved...
But instead, in what had become a small conversation between me and Lestat, you had to stick your 2 cents in and take a pot shot at something I had said... Review the entire conversation between the 2 of us...
It started off as a Simple Congratulations towards you for getting your game to work, a game that you've gone all over the message board complaining about because you couldn't get it to work, I had even tried to help you a couple months back by finding a couple of websites I thought might aid you {even though they didn't}...
Lestat made a harmless comment about my use of words in my Congrat post... So I in turn explained to him how I meant the phrase... Lestat in turn said that he tends to be melodramatic... To me that means he understood my meaning and at that point found no harm meant {which there wasn't}... To me that would signify the end of the conversation... But as usual, you need to follow behind me like some lost puppy dog dissecting my posts to your own needs and while being nice about it, try to crush me under your boot heel with your inoffensive wording...
Try not having to dissect and analyze everything and flexing your dominance on the boards... I'm well aware you are liked way more than me, you don't need to flex your muscle every chance you get...
I understand that to most people here, I rate lower than the Bots that roam the boards... I accept this, but for those who have extended their hands and haven't withdrawn them, they make it worth sticking around...
I'm like everyone else who has been gaming for more than 10 years... I've got games that don't work or are very hard to get working smoothly... My Wing Commander Games to name a few... I've followed every set of instructions I could find on the web and still none have worked for me or my computer... Except for the latest one, that one works okay on newer computers...
