Portable or networked Pandora Directive

I know that you guys have all seen Glenn's Guide to Retro Gaming on XP, which has instructions for setting up DoxBox for Pandora or UAKM. But I wanted to tell you about an interesting variation on the setup and what some of the advantages are.

Instead of installing Pandora on the C: drive, I installed it on a portable, USB hard disk. There are a few good reasons for doing this.

Reason number one:
Once Pandora is installed (with DosBox) on the portable USB hard disk, you can take the hard disk and plug it into virtually any XP computer and play Pandora immediately. Also, you can do the same thing with a USB flash memory stick instead of a hard disk and essentially make a Pandora Directive cartridge (but the flash drive needs to be at least 4 GB to hold everything - but they're available.)

Reason number two:
If you have a local area network (for instance, a wireless network at home with 2 or 3 computers) you can plug the USB drive into one computer, and map that drive onto all the other computers on your network. Then, you can play Pandora from any of the other computers that are on your network. Just click it and go. No CDs to load or anything.

Reason number three:
You can put both PD and UAKM on the USB drive, without taking up 10 GB of your primary disk space.

Check it out.
Nice tip.

You might be able to do something similiar with Overseer, since my file archive allows you to play from your hard drive without swapping cds. Doesn't apply to the DVD version though.

A sansGUI interface is one that does not have the small features called "Windows". The term comes from the French word sans, meaning "without".

SansGUI's are more typically used in Unix-like Operating Systems. The conventional wisdom is that a GUI (Grapical User Interface) help guide the casual computer user to perform routine tasks with Point and Click simplicity. SansGUI's have acquired considerable acceptance for users accustomed to the CLI (Command Line Interface).
good tips! Never thought of playing it from a USB drive berfore, but it makes sense... I have a couple of 8gb thumb drives around... might test it out!

That sounds really cool! But it could be dangerous to have something like that at work-- I'm not sure if I could resist the temptation...

I've got 160GB Seagate FreeAgent for backup purposes, and an old 80GB IDE drive in an enclosure, so I know I could totally do it. But I'll try not to...
Boss key. Win 3.1 style!

Doc, I love this idea. Those things are a bit too expensive for me right now however.

Yeah. I didn't realize they were a hundred bucks or more because mine was given to me.

But I was looking on eBay, and there are a bunch of external USB hard disks for twenty to fifty bucks, which isn't too bad. At least not compared to how cool it is to be able to carry Tex around with you and play anywhere.
Just type in "Keychain GB" at eBay and you come up with several 8 gig USB Portables, all for under 25 buck...
Amazing how cheap things get with the passage of just a little time... 2-3 years ago things like that would either have been unheard of or cost you a couple hundred bucks...
Same thing with software... 5 years ago Windows cost about 80 to 100 dollars, now Vista will run you over 500...
Somethings go down in price, but the things you need to survive do nothing but go up in price... So it keeps a lot of people from being able to afford those things that have gone down...

I've found that using an external enclosure can be the best way to move a lot of data. Old IDE hard drives are pretty cheap nowadays, and since its an enclosure you put it in, you can swap it with other drives later. You could have room for your whole HD, or even clone it! You could also install Linux and boot right from the USB drive itself.

Oh man... I am seriously considering putting this game on an external drive so I can take it to work. I have Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum on an external drive already, but Pandora? Must... resist...

Data was awesome in that movie...Brent Spiner is the man.
