We celebrate Orthodox Easter at our house. This year, it isn't until April 27 (5 weeks from today).

FYI
The next two years Orthodox Easter will be one week later than Western Easter, and in 2010 and 2011 they'll be at the same time.

There is no theological difference between them and thy are both celebrating exactly the same thing. In fact, they both are defined as the first Sunday after the first full moon of Spring. But there are some technicalities in how they define those dates. It involves a difference between Julian and Gregorian calendars, ecclesiastical and paschal full moons and astronomical and fixed equinoxes.

The most obvious difference is that Orthodox Easter *always* comes after Passover. The Western Easter often precedes it.

It's not as simple as that.
The Crucifixion took place after Jesus entered Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. This is one of the conditions used to determine the Orthodox date. For example,
1) after the Vernal (Spring) Equinox, and 2) after the Jewish Passover, and 3) after the first full moon in Spring, and 4) on a Sunday after 21 March.

No. They don't decide this date every year. The dates are all pre-determined according to tables of astronomical events which were established many hundreds of years ago.

Although, we get a pretty good bargin on all of our Easter candy after the Western Easter.

I've never been much of a religious person... I'm more Science and Logic type... I seek proof... I respect your beliefs and for the most part all others, I just ask that you don't preach to me and try to make me a believer ...

It's quite interesting that you should say that and I can certainly understand and respect your position. I was much the same for most of my life and was downright hostile for many years.

It wasn't until after I had reached a PhD in Physics (hard to be more Science/Logic-type than that) that religion started to become clear to me. But don't worry. I'm not trying to convert you. I'm only saying that there are a lot more religious scientists than you would probably guess - and they are not mutually exclusive.

Oh I'm sure there are... There are just sooo many unexplained BAD things that don't need to be, but this all powerful being won't do anything to change it??? Millions of people dying of starvation, that's got to be on of the cruelest torturous deaths to go through, but it happens...

When I think of that, I have to go for the "Life Just Is" Theory on how things are... I doubt I'll ever go for a PhD, but I've put the better half of a decade into further education from high school... Rarely does a day go by that religion doesn't cross my path in one form or another... One way or another someone talks about god or hell or something...

I keep holding my breath that my school will call me back for one of those honorary PhDs... lol Sooner or later I'll end up turning Blue... lol


If there is a battle going on between heaven and hell {aka Good and Evil}, I would have to put my money on Evil, because I see a lot more of that than I do Good... You watch movies where the writer has a grand vision of the world going through this terrible fate and then we pull out of it and become this thriving race... I'm getting tired of waiting and going through the Disasters...

Everyone needs something to believe in, I'm not going to try and take that away from anyone... Some believe in the All Powerful Being creating every thing and then others believe in the Monkey Theory... So many things in the Bible have already been discovered to have been lies/fiction... I personally just find it hard to believe without some good solid proof...

Look at when the scientists say the earth and sun were created. Surprisingly at the same time which supports the Bible.

God supposedly created earth and man in 6 days and then on the 7th rested... Why does Science say man didn't show up on earth for Millions of years later???
