New York, New York

Hi guys - in September I'll be spending 2 nights in New York City (1 full day, plus a couple of half days in between airport hops) - is there anything you guys can recommend for a first timer? I don't drive and I tend to get lost so the keywords would be:

Cheapish
Interesting
Foolproof

Any suggestions? :)

Cheap, in New York... Sorry I can't help you there... lol One of those side street walk in, walk out type places...

Angelo's is a good place to eat if you make it to Little Italy, but that place is Pricey...

So why are you coming to the States??? Business, Pleasure, thinking of Relocating???

I went there in 2000 for Toy Fair, you can pretty much walk to anywhere in the city. My only goals were to see the statue of liberty and get a fake rolex. (I did both )

So cheap....free.. Time Square at night. Window shopping on 5th Avenue. Central park for a nice walk/peoplewatching.

Somewhat cheapie....Empire State building.

Course the Met is amazing but you could spend days just there.

Hope you have a ton of fun!!!!!!

A warning....I blew my nose after a day or so in NYC, and there was god-awful black stuff in the tissue. :o You don't really notice it, but I was shocked.
Just a heads up!
mmmm thats good pollution! lol
Oooh thanks I'll do my best to enjoy myself! I'm just going for a holiday really. I'm spending 2 and a half weeks in the USA but 1 week is in Kansas seeing mates and another is in Ithaca, NY (seeing different mates) so only have a couple of days for a stopover in the city. I'd happily relocate to America but probably somewhere quieter and less polluted... What's the Toy Fair? A fair about toys?

Keep away from Jen! She has black snot!

Go for a walk in central park, head down to times square, you might want to stop by Tiffany's on 5th just to say you've seen it. There's the Empire State which I think is still pretty cheap, and stay away from the port authority if you can as it's got a history of being a bit rough.

I've never been to New York so I can't help you...but I've always wanted to go to the top of the Empire State Building and just look out at the city and let the view engulf me.

I've only been up there twice... Don't go up the Empire State Building if it is Cold... You probably won't enjoy it, unless you are use to the cold... Try to make sure you get out to see the Lady In The Water... Statue Of Liberty for the simple minded...

If you are doing any traveling while in New York, go up and see the Falls in Niagara...

OK *scribbles frantically in notebook*

I'd like to see the Liberty but the tours are hugely expensive... although someone said you can take the Staten Island Ferry for free and see it anyway? Also my parents made me promise I wouldn't kick around the city after dark. But I want to see Times Square at night! Or even the harbour lights from a boat. That would be nice.

What time does it get dark over there in September?

Only place you really need to stay away from at night is Central Park... lol

That last one is from the top of the Empire State Building... As you can see from the Time Stamp I was up there in the middle of November, so I can't stress this enough, if it isn't warm out, don't go up there... Unless you like a wind chill of about 5 below... I think that's what it was when we were up there...

THANKS!!! Ever since 9/11, I've kinda wanted to go to ground zero...but...I don't know if I can emotionally take it. Just the thought of all the innocent lives that were taken that day. I think it would be probably be pretty tough for me.

Not a problem... I wasn't sure how I would handle it when I knew I was going to be going there either... I felt something, but it wasn't unbearable... Especially if you stop and take a look around and see how life is still progressing, you can get a Proud feeling...

The first 2 pictures are of the hole that was once the Trade Center... The other 2 pictures are inside of St. Paul's Church... I'm not religious myself, but St. Paul's is a Beautiful Church, Building/Structure, whatever you want to call it...

I have a few more, but the Wire Mesh they have all around most of the area, make the pictures a bit difficult to see through...

Let me know if you'd like me to post them anyway...

I've found a hop on-hop off bus tour which seems to cover most places for £19, including the Staten Island Ferry. Now all I need is a place to stay and a new brain (the American version, to help me understand subways)...

There are some people who Live in New York who still don't understand the Subways... lol

That area of New York is like a Huge Amusement Park... You'll need a map, then locate on the map where you want to go, then you need to locate the Letter of the Subway that is closest to it... Then find a subway near your current location and make sure you get on your letter subway...

I only used the subway a couple of times, mostly we walked topside... But that's pretty much how I viewed how the Subway System worked up there...
