Martian Memorandum

I don't know if anyone here still plays the earlier Tex games, but here goes.

On my DOS machine I'm running:

Pentium III 1.4Ghz
256mb RAM
Voodoo5 5500
Soundblaster AWE32
Roland MPU-IPC with attached Roland CM-32L (MT-32 module)
MS-DOS 7.10 (Windows 98SE DOS Mode boot)

Now I've configured MM for Roland music and SB sound, and the sound plays OK. The music, however is another issue. The CM-32L just ends up playing random notes/sound effects other than recognizable music (i've heard the MM soundtrack before). MM seems to be the only game in my MT-32 games collection that has a problem, and I'm pretty sure there isn't a hardware conflict.

Here's my Config.sys:

DOS=SINGLE
SWITCHES=/F
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO

ACCDATE=C- D-
SET PATH=C:\;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\FASTVID
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

And my Autoexec.bat:

Any suggestions? Anyone with an old-school MPU-401 interface and running DOS?

just run it in dosbox works fine.
Is it possible to run matian memorandum on current computers that has windows xp?

Yes, but you will need DOSBOX. It is a free DOS emulator you can Google for it. All the TM games are now easily playable on XP through DOSBOX.
I got a version you can just double-click and play - PM me with your email and I'll send it to you...

Are you able to play it when you have the actual game disks?

EDIT: Does anyone know what keys do what in the game? Like how do you quit and such? Also is there an option section, some of the screen cuts off at the top with some of it reapperiang at the bottom.
Hey guys, please check out the latest guide for Martian Memorandum on my blog. The setup walk-thru is actually in video.

I'm thinking about using the video presentation format a great deal more in the future...let me know if you think it is effective or not!

I also found downloadable referenced above, runs on XP just fine without music. I'll play with mm.cfg to see if I can get better performance. Found documentation here:

I just posted an install guide for the game on my blog. Its a piece of cake to get running. Heres the link

If anyone's interested, for those who play on a DOS system (which seems to be the minority here) what I found that fixed this issue was a setting in my BIOS called '8-bit I/O Recovery time'. It's a setting that provides optional additional cycles for 8-bit ISA cards. This is to compensate for lag in the slow ISA bus. The higher this setting is, the better these cards work on faster systems at the cost of some lag. My BIOS allows up to 8 cycles, so I changed to it from the default if 1 and now music is OK again.

As I mentioned in my first post, I use a Roland MPU-IPC, which is an old 8-bit ISA MIDI interface card that has an 'Intelligent' mode for older games like Gateway II and the Sierra/Dynamix series. In short, DOS games with a 'MPU-401' or 'Roland' option were written for these cards.
