Very Angry. (Under a Killing Moon Related)
So recently I tryed with DOS box to make Pandora work properly with my new Alienware laptop. It does, it's awesome... but I decided today I'd rather do Under a Killing Moon first and go thru the 3 big titles.
But... in Windows Vista - for me anyways... It doesn't believe you when you put any of the Under a Killing Moon discs in the drive. It ejects them as if to say, yeah right... that's not a disc...give me something with info on it.
I've never hated an operating system more... Things like this pop up all the time and I'm not just talking old software.
I will never understand the whole put it out before it's ready mentality. I thought XP was a great step and it only needed minor tweaks and to maybe have some new features to make for a new excellent operating system... and instead I get this buggy crap. I didn't even have a choice from Alienware to get Windows XP....not that I woulda taken it because I figured Vista was going to be something great.
It's not.... yet anyways. I've given it so many chances and said well okay just something that needs an update...but I can only give so many chances... I'm tired of it, Vista is horrible. I want XP back.

Welcome to the club mate!
Vista is a piece of crap! A few of my friends got it and not only do they complain about it, but I get pissed off using it when I borrow one of their notebooks or something like that.
You are right, it was not thought out well enough before they implemented it, and it annoyingly restrictive.
Okay sure, if you are a very VERY basic user who only uses a maximum of 3 programs (i.e. Word, Email and Internet Explorer) it is great... but when you actually try and DO anything with it that escapes the bounds of what they classify an "average user" you will either no be trusted (getting hounded with a million and one warning boxes) or it will not work as it is supposed to... I think you are part of the latter category.
No in my field I am often asked for advice on to what to look for in a new computer, and if they ever mention Vista, I tell them one thing straight out:
"If you want a new PC, and it comes with Vista, the best thing you can do it un-install it as soon as you get it and put XP back on"
...That's the only way people can enjoy a hassle free existence alongside their computer at the moment.
Give Vista 2 more years and it might be okay... in the meantime, it is a good looking OS... but like most bimbos, it lacks the brains and asks a LOT of dumb questions!
That’s my $0.02.

cheers mate. I'm glad you agree. I remember a while ago you said you were following the Vista progress pretty closely and thought it was looking really good... so I was afraid you'd be like ACTUALLY VISTA ROCKS!!!
Not really, but I do remember you mentioning you were following it closely.
It's a bummer. With this Alienware laptop I'm afraid to uninstall Vista to put XP back on because I've not bought a computer from a company in a long long time. I usually just build 'em...so changing software and hardware has been super easy. This intimidates the poop outta me.

Yeah, Vista sucks. Several magazine articles mention that market studies have been done and Vista has CAUSED a decline in PC sales. This has never before happened. As an example, when XP rolled out, PC sales increased because people wanted XP and it was more cost effective to buy a new machine with it installed already. The exact reverse is happening now.
On the bright side, sales of last year's PC models (with XP installed) is still strong!!

I'm a little curious about which Alienware laptop you have and when you bought it, because right now, all of their laptops are available with XP. However, it does cost an extra hundred bucks to get XP instead of Vista. But it'swell worth it.I didn't even have a choice from Alienware to get Windows XP....not that I woulda taken it because I figured Vista was going to be something great.
Check their website or ask tech support to see if XP is now available for your model.
So far, I have found the Alienware tech support people to be friendly and helpful. I'm sure they could help you get XP your laptop. Of course, it won't be free, but it's worth all the aggravation you will avoid.
Isn't this the way it always goes with new operating systems? I mean, if I remember correctly, a lot of people frowned on XP when it very first came out. Maybe it just takes a year or two to get all the bugs out, and for more advanced users to learn from each other how to skirt around issues to do what they want to do.
So yeah, give Vista a year or so, and maybe it'll be worth upgrading by then. Until then, I'm peachy with XP.

freepizza wrote:Yeah, people really didnt like Windows ME when it came out either and that turned out to be a mega success.
Not really, Vistas flaws are well beyond that of previous operating systems (besides ME of course)... the response to Vista (as Gunslinger said) has been probably the worst in modern PC OS history. The only reason people frowned on XP (and there were a lot less people then there are with Vista now) is becuase it was different... but people could see the advantages.jcarnby wrote:Isn't this the way it always goes with new operating systems? With Vista, it's a downright piece of junk. People are not frowning on it becuase it is different, they are doing it becuase nobody wants to replace XP with something that offers literally no advantages, bar a pretty interface. It's a total joke and really busts my chops.
