Tesla Effect already on Torrent
No Tex fan is going to not buy it and pirate it.
Don't worry about it. Pirate games are not lost sales. Speaking as an Ex Pirate myself most games I used to pirate, I never would have bought. Steam put an end to my pirating exploits, games are just to easy to buy now and to much hassle to pirate.
Also even in my most piratical days I never would have pirated a small indy game, just triple a titles that were usually not worth the money. A lot of pirates use torrents as a try before you buy system.
I wouldn't worry about this, it was bound to happen and I doubt it will have any effect on sales. In fact I see it as a good thing. If people play it get into it hopefully they will go buy it at a later date and even if they don't they probably wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

This is a very good point. Both the video game and music industries have done a good job of providing people what they want in an easily consumable form. It won't eliminate piracy altogether, but it helps minimize it. Now if only the movie and television industries would realize the folly of their ways they could greatly reduce piracy in their industries, which is still quite rampant.talon2000uk wrote:No Tex fan is going to not buy it and pirate it.

I find it to be a symptom of health; after all, if you couldn't GIVE it away...
...but yeah, it sucks that there are someone out there who wouldn't help fund another game.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
The security guard where I work plays games all the time. I've never spoken to him about it until this week. I started a conversation about his game playing and was about to mention Tesla Effect until he told me that all his games are pirated.
I was really angry at him with that and thought there was no way I would tell him about Tesla. It's people like him that kill the industry, but it is inevitable that people will pirate a game or three. But those people are in the minority these days. The whole point of Kickstarter was to make sure that there were enough funds to get it made at all.
The Three Cards were both pirated within hours of release so it's a sign of the times (and it's always been there to some extent). Let's hope that word spreads and people want to download from all these other ways - Amazon, Mac store etc - if it's easy to buy it then people will pay rather than struggle to find an illegal way.

The only games that don't get pirated are the ones no one wants to play. It's true that most of these pirates would never have bought the game in the first place and it's also true that more people playing this game and talking about it is going to increase its visibility. I won't go as far as to say it's a good thing, but it's a fact of life and not as bad as it seems, especially for a game like this.
Whelp... it looks like we're screwed. BFG have just decided to send out maybe 5000+ extra game codes just to placate the whining jerkholes who hate Steam more than they love this game. A lot of extra codes are going to be shared. You know it.

This is why I was so, so adamant that BFG should not give in to a bunch of crybabies. No one really cared! Not really! Only some people on the forums give a damn that their backer code was for Steam. And with 6000+ people getting the codes, that's a small number.
Cripes.

Here's a pic I made to encourage good behavior:

Ultimately I think a backer rewards survey before May 7th via Kickstarter with an either/or "Do you want the game on Steam or GOG?" would of avoided the mixup. Those who didn't want a Steam key would not of gotten one. This is how it was with other Kickstarters.
Also beta backers already had gotten the game on GOG but Big Finish sent them all a Steam key. Steam keys are a lot more tradable and saleable than a GOG key as there are sites and groups specifically set up for trading and selling Steam keys. The community for trading GOG keys is relatively small and limited to their own site.
All in all hindsight is 20/20. But it's already getting great feedback on GOG which will certainly promote sales alongside sales of all the other Tex Murphy games on GOG.

BFG screwed up by not polling their backers in advance. Giving away extra keys was the right thing to do in light of their screw up. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do the right thing especially when you're talking about backers that were generous enough to put their trust in you years in advance.
Most people will not be giving away their keys. Some will, but that's just life. This is not going to be a big day 1 seller though, so the sales questions is a long haul and we're going to want to people to be talking about it for some time.

Another option would of been to offer GOG codes just to those who requested them after the Steam keys were erroneously sent via a form on Big Finish's site. Sort of a post-launch poll since there wasn't a pre-launch poll. It's free for developers to request keys from GOG.
Those who only wanted a GOG key were personally requesting BFG to revoke or exchange the unwanted keys without intention to use, sell, or trade them during the confusion. It's entirely BFG's choice to send GOG keys out to all backers though and I respect that.
