Another UAKM "puzzle"

Jim the old guy wrote:Good research, Doc. Appreciated that little tidbit. As for me, I opt for the CA-OR border for the same reasons as stated by Baf. Also, tho' there are discrepancies in most games, I would like to believe AC and the gang had a heads up on this one. Then again, UAKM was more of a spoof/comedy than Pandora.
Yeah well Mean Streets was the ultimate spoof/comedy of the series what with the Maltese Fruitcake and all.
Doc, this is something you'll have to take up with Aaron when an Idle conversation comes along... lol

Maltese Fruitcake? Too funny! As you guessed, I've never played MS or MM but have heard a lot about them. (sigh) Maybe....one of these days....
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
I hope you guys don't get mad at me for making all these small criticisms about the games. I love them as much as anyone. But you know how it is...Without a new game to play, you just have to start looking deeper into what little is available.

So, while playing UAKM and arriving on the Moonchild, Lowell Percival talks from the floating cube:

"We have it all here. Aquariums, aviaries,...." and so on. He goes on to say, "And the people. Only the cream de la cream. Architects, bankers, doctors, artists, musicians, a former president. And as for the women...ah...they're all beautiful, intelligent, accomplished."

It seems to me, that the way this quote is constructed, the men are the architects, bankers, doctors, etc, and the women where chosen for their suitable companionship qualities for these exceptional men. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but...it does seem a little sexists. Also, has anyone noticed the similarity of this to Dr. Strangelove's mine-shaft plan?

Actually, I guess this is all pretty consistent with the general character of the game. UAKM strikes me as sort of a guy-fantasy game because, with few exceptions, the women are all beautiful, not too bright, and hot to trot. Even Eva Schanzee is not above playing Twister with a dirty-old-man. This is all very different from the portrayal of females in Pandora and Overseer.

How do our female members here react to the male/female characterizations in UAKM? There is definitely some male-fantasy in UAKM, but how do women view it?
Well, Mrs. TOG says, and I quote: "You're all sexist pigs." You know what I said? "Thanks for the compliment, dear!"

Actually, UAKM seems to appear a bit sexist but I would NEVER accuse CJ and AC of creating such an atmosphere. It could be the nature of the game and, as you stated Doc, it's more of a man's game.

However, I disagree on the "dumb blonde" inference. Alaynah Moore and Eva Schanzee were both inteligent women, especially if they were hired to work at GRS. Such a place calls for an upper echelon of intelligence and these two fit the bill. The Twistee game reference at the end could be nothing more than an outlet for all the pressure and stress due to saving the world. After all, many of society' "elite" are known for their strange and unusual out-of-the-work-place habits, not to mention some of their haunts.

Then again, I'm darn near 62 and I've already forgotten what this thread is about! "Honey? Could your sexist pig husband have another Bailey and Geritol? Thanks, sweetpea."
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
I still remember that time you ate a Dagwood and forgot it Jim :D

As I said, "...with few exceptions..." I did not say they were all dumb. However, I think Alaynah's character still belongs in the bimbo catagory. She didn't strike me as being very sharp. Additionally, we had Melahn Tode, Sylvia Linsky, the bartender, the Escort girls, and Francesca. None of these girls would I want as my partner in College Bowl.

The Countess doesn't count (no pun intended) because 'she' was a 'he.' The sharpest knife in the drawer was Eddie Ching. But she was another male-fantasy character (Beautiful, oriental femme fatale.) I still gotta say that most of the female characters were bimbo-ish - with a few exceptions. I think that was all part of the fun. I just wonder if the female game players had the same sort of fun that we guys did.

I don't mean to sound argumentative. I just think this is an interesting spin on the game. Especially what the female view is on it.

No takers yet....

What about Chelsee?

and Sylvia in UAKM was very much a bimbo and much less so in Overseer. The Alaynah Moore character had an interesting back story with Tex though. He used to date her older sister and she had a crush. So she kind of reverted back to old form around him. I wouldn't call that character a bimbo.

Eddie Ching was a powerful gangster. Eva was a spy and rather smart up until the Twister comment.

I just don't see the weak sexist characters you do. I could go into a whole psyche "people see what they want to see," thing and suggest right now you've got a thing for bimbos.
Melahn Tode had Ph.D.'s in Advanced Biochemistry and Quantum Mechanics. Fact.

I am very offended by this comment. I am the one who thinks the portrayal of women in UAKM is sexist, unflattering and unusual. The first time I played the game, I found it shocking.

So if you want to talk psycho-babble, let's talk about why you don't see anything unusual in UAKM's portrayal of women. People don't notice what they think is normal. So, right now, it looks like you think all women are bimbos.

I think women are much better than that.

The comment was tounge in cheek thus the devil face and wink.

I don't think you're seeing things. I however stick by the statement that I don't see the weak sexist female characters you do with the exception of his ex-wife.

Ok. Offense retracted.
Oh you are talking strictly about UAKM, I was about to start naming girls from Pandora... lol No wonder I didn't see a lot of names in these recent posts...

I didn't find EVA to be a Bimbo and she was Very Sexy...

I wouldn't call the Bartender a Bimbo... She knew more of what was going on then she let on...

However for the most part, UAKM did portray woman in a more Negative light... Chelsea wasn't as much of a main character in UAKM as she was in PD, so you only talked to her at the News Stand and the Conversations were limited to what was currently going on... At least in PD we were able to have Conversation with her and then a date and so forth and so on...

Franny on the other hand, I wouldn't call her dumb or a bimbo... Franny had her stuff together even if she did have a crush on Tex and twisted her tongue from time to time... No different than when Tex talks to Chelsea, we know he is bright, but when around her he puts his foot in his mouth...

And the Countess, we should still consider her a Female... For all we know the Chameleon was originally a female, maybe IT just liked the Indian Male form better... The Chameleon could have been anything, maybe IT wasn't even a person??? Just a Big Mutated Lizard of an unknown Species...
Okay enough foolishness...

First and foremost: I meant no offense or challenge to you, Doc. And, after re-reading my post I can see where it would seem an attack. My apologies. Yes, for the most part, the women in UAKM seem a bit on the slow, dimwitted side. Melahn Tode especially fit that bill. However, she did come up with a great line when Tex told her she wasn't his type. She responded, "Oh, I didn't know you were THAT kind of guy." I still laugh when I hear her say that and will laugh again if I ever play the game again.

Thanks Jim. I wasn't offended by your earlier post. I just thought you misinterpreted what I was saying, so I tried to clarify it.

I must say, however, that I am very surprised by the level of denial that I've seen here for something that is so completely obvious. It's almost scary.

I have no doubt that if I had written a post which characterized women similarly to how they are characterized in UAKM, the good folks here would crucify me in a New York minute. (I know this because I've been ganged up on for a lot less.) But UAKM does it and everyone suddenly goes blind.

That reminds me. Didn't someone ask once if TM fans were like a cult? I think we have the answer!
