Day One Day Two Day Three Day Four Day Five Day Six Day Seven Day Eight

San Tomas Mission (cont.)

Tex is in what's defined as a "pickle."  It's going to take some quick thinking to get away from Slade. You must use the following conversation path to outwit Slade.

Make a last request.

Slade will agree, "as long as it's reasonable."

Ask for one last kiss.

"Can I kiss Sylvia good-bye? At least that way, I can die a happy man."

"Well, I wouldn't want you to to die 'unhappy.' Go ahead," Slade says. "But don't do anything stupid."

Give penknife to Sylvia.

Tex kneels in front of Sylvia, and moves in to kiss her. "I'm gonna' find a way to get us out of this, okay?" he whispers. Tex and Sylvia kiss, and Tex slips her the penknife.

Challenge Slade.

Tex challenges Slade to put down the gun, and go mano a mano with him. Slade says he can make an exception this one time, and puts the gun on the ground.

Go for the light switch - then hide.

With Slade's gun on the ground, Tex darts off and finds the light switch for the clock tower. Slade picks up his gun and fires at Tex, but misses. Tex pulls the lever, the lights die, and Tex hides behind some of the machinery.

Slade turns the lights back on. "No honor among thieves, eh Murphy?" he says. "Why don't you just come out first; make things easy on yourself?" Slade looks back in Sylvia's direction. "If you don't, I might just kill your girlfriend first."

Use rock as a diversion.

Tex takes the rock he found on the ground floor of the mission out of his coat and tosses it. Slade turns in the direction of the noise, as Tex watches.

"You can't hide forever," Slade says. "I'll get you sooner or later." Tex makes his way to another part of the room. "Sooner's better for me," Slade says.

Grab shield, run for the landing.

Tex finds a garbage can lid and, using it for a shield, makes a break for the landing of the clocktower catwalk. Slade fires as Tex runs by, but runs out of bullets. While Slade reloads, Tex drops the shield and climbs the steps to the landing.

Out of options, and easy pickings up on the landing, Tex steps forward. "Okay, okay, Slade, I give up. I'm not gonna' get out of this situation alive, anyway. But I do have a proposition for you."

Slade finishes reloading. "For some reason, you don't seem to understand," he says. "I don't need to make a deal with you."

Buy some time.

"You want to blackmail Gideon, don't you?" Tex says. "To do that, you're going to need all eight STG passcards. I know where you can get seven."

"What sort of a bloody drongo do you think I am?" Slade says.

Toss STG passcard into clock gears.

"Here's the STG passcard that Sonny stole from you." Tex says, holding up the card. "You let Sylvia and me go, I'll get you the other six." Tex tosses the card down from the landing. "Oops."

The card falls into one of the huge gears that run the clocktower. Slade reaches to grab the card, but his hand gets caught in the gear. The gun falls from his hands, and Tex jumps down from the landing. As Slade gets up off the ground, Tex punches him in the face repeatedly, but after a few swings, Slade blocks Tex's punches and knees him in the stomach, then in the face.

Tex falls to the ground, as Sylvia desperately tries to cut her ropes with the penknife Tex gave her.

Tex stands up. "Tell me something," he says. "Why do they call you Big Jim Slade?"

Slade answers by jumping into the air and kicking Tex in the face. Tex falls to the ground and looks up at Slade.

"Well?" Slade asks.

"Yeah, that clarifies it," Tex says, dazed.

"Well if that didn't, this will," Slade says. He jumps and kicks Tex again. Twice in a row, this time. He kicks Tex in the stomach, then tries to punch him, but Tex dodges and starts beating on Slade's arm. Slade finally blocks, then head-butts Tex, who falls against a railing.

"Ow," Slade says, holding his arm, "that wasn't too fair."

"Are you okay?" Tex asks, trying to stay conscious.

"Well, yeah," Slade says.

"That's too bad."

"Yeah," Slade says, and proceeds lay a round of punches on Tex's face.

Slade grabs Tex by the throat. Tex looks him in the eye and says, "You know, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you are good. You are very, very good. Do you give lessons?"

"Well, yeah. Matter of fact, this one's on me," Slade says, and head-butts Tex in the face.

Back in the chair, Sylvia finally cuts through her ropes with the penknife. Slade has Tex by his hair, and is raising his hand to finish him off, when the clock strikes one o' clock.

"Oh look," Slade says. "Time to die."

"Slade!"

Slade turns around to see who yelled his name, and finds Sylvia, who squirts a stream of oil in his face. Slade steps back, blinded by the oil, and Tex grabs the collar of his coat.

"This is for Sonny!" he yells, and punches Slade between the eyes.
